a gorgeous course, all the way around, with a front 9 with plenty of elevation changes, narrow rollercoaster fairways, a few blind shots and some water hazards, and a back 9, quite difficult with cliffside finishing holes. this par 72 starts with four beautiful holes : the par-5 1st is uphill all the way along a cliff (and the ocean, on the right), and requires a long and blind approach over a small stream crossing the fairway (and flowing out into the ocean) to reach the green, and is followed by the pretty and straight par-4 2nd, with a steeply-downhill tee shot landing onto a narrow tree-lined fairway and a steeply-uphill second shot to get to the sloped green. the par-3 3rd hole is superb with its peninsula green, but the dogleg left par-4 4th is nice too, with another steeply-downhill tee shot and an uphill approach toward the green over a small stream coming down from the hill and crossing the fairway. after an “easier” par-4 5th hole, with a slanted fairway winding its way uphill to the green, you will move on to the short and straight par-4 6th, with a blind tee shot flying through a tree-lined fairway downward to the sloped green, reachable from the tee box. then, after the dogleg par-4 7th hole, bending slightly to the right, with a steeply-downhill tee shot landing onto a narrow fairway and a long uphill second shot to try to reach the green (framed by two elongated bunkers), you will face the wide open dogleg left par-4 8th, along the ocean (on the far left) and its elevated and undulating green. as for the beautiful dogleg left par-4 9th hole, you will need to hit your tee shot over a small lake landing down onto a rollercoaster fairway, before hitting your approach downward to the visually attractive green, set next to a lake. the scenery then changes on your way back, starting with the dogleg left par-4 10th, with an uphill tee shot and a tough approach to an elevated and undulating green, guarded by a small pond (in front) and partially hidden by tall trees (on the right), before walking over to the scenic dogleg par-4 11th, along and above the ocean (on the left). water is again present on the pretty par-3 12th hole, facing the ocean way below and with a tee shot flying past a small mountain river crossing the fairway, midway, just like on the very nice par-4 13th, with an uphill tee shot and a tough second shot downward to a peninsula green, and the superb par-3 14th, with a downhill tee shot over a big lake landing onto a tiny peninsula green set midway on its edge. the par-5 15th hole, with the ocean below (on the right), is quite tricky with a blind tee shot over trees to try to reach the green (set slightly to the right), unlike the “easier” and straight par-4 16th, with a fairway again hugging the ocean (on the right) and with trees (on the left). finally, as if you did not have enough challenges, the very tough par-4 17th hole, above the ocean, will definitely test your skills with its fairway, split midway by a small fault, making your tee shot quite tricky to figure out, and your approach too (with a small elongated bunker to the left of the small green), not to mention the spectacular dogleg par-5 18th hole, bending very sharply to the left along the ocean and where, despite being scary, you should be able to putt for an eagle. with this cliffside international gc, rlslay designed another masterpiece, and one of my favorites, where you almost get two different courses (inland and cliffside) “for the price of one”, with various challenging holes that will shake you up all the way until the last green ! |

sorry rlslay, but i got kicked out by tournament officials after a couple of holes for taking... too much time admiring your gorgeous san francisco panorama (lol !). needless to say, this par 71 is another beauty, especially on the front 9, as you will find out looking down at the spectacular par-4 opening hole, with its fairway hugging a lake (on the right), flowing all the way past the green, and offering a beautiful panoramic view of the san francisco bay as you get close to it. the next four holes are also all downhill (par-3 2nd, quite narrow with trees on the left and deep rough between the tee box and the green, dogleg left par-4 3rd, par-3 4th, facing the mountains, just like the short and straight par-4 5th, quite tricky with a wide sandy area, starting midway - on the left - and spreading all across the fairway and ending not too far in front of the green). the dogleg left par-4 6th hole, another one of my favorites, is superb with the city facing the tee box (on the right) and the mountains (on the left) as your hit your approach toward the green, and is followed by the wide open dogleg right par-5 7th, where you should be able to putt for an eagle if you can avoid the lake (on the right of the green), and the dogleg right par-4 8th, easier with no water to worry about. as for the wide open dogleg right par-4 9th hole, it is simply gorgeous with its panoramic view of the city as you stand on the tee box, ready to hit your downhill tee shot, and its big lake behind its slightly-elevated green. the back 9 starts with the par-3 10th hole, offering another scenic view of a big lake and the mountains further behind the green, before moving on to the very pretty dogleg par-4 11th, bending around a huge lake (on the left) and requiring a blind approach to reach the green. then, after two dogleg left par-4 holes (12th, 13th), and the straight and slightly-downhill par-3 14th, the finishing holes, facing the city, are prettier, starting with the downhill dogleg left par-4 15th, with a huge sandy area, starting midway around the corner and ending in front of the green, and continuing with two par-5s (both offering eagle opportunities), the dogleg right 16th hole, downhill and with a lake, right behind the green, and the 17th, with its rollercoaster fairway and blind approach to the green. last, but not least, on the dogleg right par-4 18th hole, you will be able to shorten the distance to the green by hitting your downhill tee shot over tall trees in the inner corner, in order to leave you with a clear view of the green and its small clubhouse, right behind. offering spectacular views of the san francisco bay, along with nice plantings, this par 71 is a feast for the eyes and if you like this superb layout, then i strongly suggest that you download the san francisco bay gc 2017 course, also designed by rlslay as it is another masterpiecce ! |

once in a while, rlslay gives his team of gardeners a well-deserved break, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see any gorgeous tropical vegetation and lots of flowers and shrubs on this par 72. instead, you will be surprised by this sierra open, right off the bat, seeing the straight par-5 1st hole, whose undulating fairway is framed all along by sand (on the left) and a big lake (on the right). the next three holes are challenging par-4 doglegs with strategically-placed bunkers in the middle of the fairways, with the toughest one being the 3rd hole, with three bunkers to avoid, midway in the left corner, before hitting an uphill and blind approach to the green, and are followed by the dogleg right par-5 5th, quite tricky with a couple of more bunkers, midway, making the fairway quite narrow, and two deep elongated bunkers guarding the green. a scary sight awaits you as you stand on the tee box of the beautiful par-3 6th hole, with its elevated green set at the tip of the lake, before moving on to the straight par-4 7th, whose fairway is quite narrow, with bunkers around, midway again. then, after the short par-4 8th hole, with a tee shot over a wide sandy area and an approach to the green, set to the right of a small lake, you will get a break with the “easy” par-3 9th. the back 9 starts with another dogleg right par-4 hole, with a small bunker, hard to avoid in the middle of the fairway, and continues with the scenic dogleg right par-4 11th, with a tee shot over water landing onto a peninsula fairway and a green, set above the edge of the lake. water comes back into play again on the pretty par-3 13th hole, with a tee shot over a wide lake offering a nice panoramic view of sandy areas on the way to the green, before moving on to the dogleg left par-5 14th and the dogleg right par-4 15th, with their undulating fairways and blind approaches to the greens. another challenging hole is in store for you with the par-5 16th, quite tricky with bunkers in the middle of the slanted fairway, forcing you to think twice before hitting your tee shot and aiming your blind approach to the green for a potential eagle. you will complete your round with two very scenic holes, the par-3 17th, slightly downhill (with another great panoramic view), and the dogleg left par-4 18th, uphill all the way, and with its green, at the tip of the cliff, before heading for a well-deserved rest (now, it’s your time !) at the nice clubhouse, set on the left side. with this sierra open, rlslay embarked on a rather new designing territory which turned out to be quite enjoyable and challenging, but make sure to bring your bucket and spade... as you might need them on quite a few holes ! |

as expected, painted forest gc is quite colorful, but it is also challenging, especially on the front 9 (3 of the first 6 holes are par-5s !), with subtle elevation changes and quite a few blind shots. after a dogleg left par-5 opening hole, with a slightly-downhill green, too far to reach with a blind second shot, i like the nice par-3 2nd, with another slightly downhill tee shot flying past a small creek, filled with plenty of reeds and shrubs (winding its way across in front of the green), and the tough dogleg left par-5 3rd, with an undulating fairway and a blind and uphill approach to the elevated green, quite tricky to reach with a couple of tall trees (on the right) and another serpentine creek (in front). if you are in a gambling mood, then the short, straight, downhill and wide open par-4 4rd hole, is for you with its green, potentially reachable with a blind driver shot... then, after the dogleg left par-5 6th hole, downhill all the way and with a blind tee shot and a second shot over a creek winding its way across the fairway and in front of the green, you will enjoy the “cute” par-3 8th, with its blind tee shot flying past a tiny bridge and along the creek (on the right), before finishing with the challenging dogleg left par-4 9th, again downhill all the way, with a blind tee shot over bushes and trees and another blind shot toward the green. heading back home, the back 9 is easier and more wide open, after the straight par-4 10th hole, with another blind tee shot over trees and a stream (and an uphill approach to the green), as you will find out with the par-3 11th, and the dogleg right par-5 12th, with an uphill tee shot and a long and blind approach to the downhill green. last, but not least, the short par-4 16th, along a big lake (on the right) is another hole worth mentioning, with its downhill green reachable from the tee box (if you can avoid the few pot bunkers guarding it, in front and on the left), just like the pretty par-3 17th, with a tee shot over an elongated lake and a small green, framed by two bunkers (front and back). in the end, with its nice forest to gaze at, this par 72 is fun to play, but beware of the par-5 holes and some short par-4s : remember, sometimes it is better to be safe than... sorry ! |

another visually attractive layout, with small rocky mountains as a backdrop, and not as easy as it may look at first glance, especially on the back 9, with quite a few greens, set next to lakes of various sizes and shapes. after two par-4 dogleg holes to start with, bending to the right and slightly downhill all the way (1st), and turning left (uphill all the way, and with a lake to avoid on your approach toward the green, on the 2nd), you will face the pretty par-3 3rd, with a tee shot over part of an elongated lake landing onto a green, set to the water (on the left). on the dogleg right par-5 4th hole, you will need to hit a downhill tee shot, followed by a long and challenging second shot toward the green, while making sure to avoid a tiny stream crossing the fairway, not too far in front (not to mention a big bunker set in front of the flag). then, after two more doglegs (left par-4 5th, right par-4 6th), the last three holes are nice, starting with the very scenic par-4 7th, with a tee shot landing next to a couple of trees, planted midway on the bank of an elongated lake (on the left) and big bunkers (on the right), and a green, surrounded by three bunkers, and continuing with the beautiful par-3 8th, with a tee shot above a lake landing onto a wide green, and the nice and straight par-5 9th, along a big lake (on the left), with a downhill tee shot and a long second shot toward the green, set next to the water. the back 9 has plenty of water holes and some tricky approaches with water often near the greens, making you think twice before hitting your shots, as you will find out with the nice par-3 12th, with a tee shot over a big lake (but the green is quite wide), and the wide open par-5 13th, with a second shot over a big lake needed to reach the green. fortunately, you should have an eagle opportunity on the dogleg left par-5 15th hole, with an elongated lake, midway in the inner corner to watch for, and a green, reachable after a long approach, before moving on to the dogleg left par-4 16th, downhill all the way and with a tough second shot toward the green, set on the edge of a wide lake (on the left), and the par-3 17th hole, quite pretty with a tee shot flying above a sandy area forming a loop around some deep rough. with nice trees all around, slight elevation changes and fairways, narrow at times, this par 72 is quite enjoyable and challenging with plenty of water hazards, thanks to rlslay’s nice design and imagination. |

using only 4 libraries, this par 72 is quite pretty to look at with its lake panorama, and is quite challenging with plenty of downhill holes with water hazards to watch for and quite a few bunkers surrounding the greens. on the front 9, my favorite holes are the long and downhill par-3 3rd, with seven small bunkers surrounding the green (in a horseshoe shape), the dogleg right par-4 5th, downhill all the way and with a narrow fairway and six more bunkers around the green, and the dogleg left par-4 6th, with a downhill tee shot landing next to a wide lake, midway (on the right). the dogleg right par-5 7th is another tough hole, with a downhill tee shot landing onto a narrow fairway, with four bunkers (midway, on both sides) and a very long second shot if you want to try to reach the green (surrounded by three wide bunkers), unlike the easier but nice dogleg left par-4 9th, with a second shot over a small lake needed to land onto the green. the back 9 is prettier and more challenging, with plenty of water to deal with, such as on the straight and downhill par-4 10th hole, with an approach over a small stream (in front of the green) flowing out into a small lake (to the left), or the dogleg right par-5 11th, with an undulating fairway hugging a serpentine stream along trees (on the right) running all the way to the front and past the green (on the left), hard to reach on your second shot. if the dogleg par-4 12th hole is quite pretty, bending sharply to the right, around a wide lake, midway (and with a tiny island in the middle), just like the par-3 14th, with its tee shot over a big lake, the most difficult hole is the very long (more than 630 yards) and scenic par-5 15th, with a tee shot landing next to a wide lake (on the right), followed by a second shot to get close to the green, only reachable after a third and short shot. last, but not least, the beautiful par-4 18th hole will challenge you, with a tee shot flying three times over a stream, and landing next to a small elongated lake, midway (on the left), and a second shot along that serpentine stream (on the right) to reach the green. overall, with this paradise lake gc, rlslay designed a pretty layout that will keep you on your toes (or wet toes if you are not careful), even though it has a more “traditional” look that some of his other courses, often filled with lots of trees, flowers and bushes... |
