a little more than two months after playing bobby bolin's bolinwood lake course 2011, his 2023 version is a nice surprise ! why ? simply because, as he mentioned in the general info, bobby made some "cosmetic" adjustments and a few changes on a couple of holes while fixing a few displaying little bugs, here and there (which i mentioned in my previous comments), in order to make this course even more enjoyable. and the end result is a success : while this par 72 is still quite challenging, it is prettier and we should all thank bobby bolin for updating, once in a while, some of his earlier creations... |

another nice links course, with its usual amount of pot bunkers, small mounds and deep rough that will keep you on your toes, especially on your approaches to the (often) small and undulating greens. this par 70 starts with a nice par-5 opening hole, with a small rocky wall midway, over which you will have to hit your second shot to reach the green, before moving later on to the short and straight par-4 3rd where, with pot bunkers right in front of the green, you will have to think twice before hitting your tee shot if you want to reach it. on the scenic par-4 4th hole, along the ocean (on the right), you will need to hit a big tee shot in order to land past the downhill slope, halfway, before making sure to avoid a couple of pot bunkers in front of the green and a little... puddle behind. then, after the left dogleg par-4 5th hole, and its blind approach toward the green (with more pot bunkers behind), you will face another short and straight par-4, the 6th hole, with a narrow elongated green, surrounded on both sides by small mounds filled with deep rough, before heading to the right dogleg par-4 7th, uphill all the way, with a tee shot landing onto a plateau, and a blind second shot toward the green. you will finish the front 9 with the downhill par-3 8th, facing the ocean, and the right dogleg par-4 9th, with an uphill tee shot landing near a pot bunker and a mound (set in the middle of the fairway) and a downhill approach, along nice homes next to a road (on the left), in the direction of the green (with, unfortunately, a few facades partially darkened mysteriously...). the back 9 starts with the uphill par-3 10th hole, and continues with the long right dogleg par-5 11th, with a downhill tee shot landing onto a heavily-slanted fairway, and an elevated green, impossible to reach on your second shot, and with slopes on both sides. the par-3 12th hole is quite pretty, with a downhill slope facing the ocean and a green, with plenty of fans on both sides, and is followed by another long par-5 hole, the right dogleg 13th, with a fairway hugging the ocean (on the left), pot bunkers to watch out in the middle of the fairway and a green, hard to reach again on your second shot. but the toughest hole on this course is probably the par-3 14th, with its narrow green real close to the ocean (on the left) and with pot bunkers right in front... the last four holes are par-4s, starting with the right dogleg 15th, with an uphill tee shot landing onto a plateau and a blind and downhill second shot toward the green (with small mounds and a couple of pot bunkers to watch for), and the downhill 16th, with more pot bunkers in the middle of the fairway and another narrow green to reach. as for the short 17th hole, you will have to think twice if you want to reach the green from the tee, as a big mound, filled with deep rough, "sits" right in front of the narrow green, with a couple of pot bunkers behind (next to a small rocky wall, seen on the 1st hole), before coming back to the starting point with the straight 18th, along nice homes on a hilltop (on the right) and a green, set right in front of that castle (seen on the above picture). with nice homes all along the course and a pretty rocky coast to gaze at, this par 70 may look easy, at first, but long par-5 holes and a few short par-4 risk/reward holes (with quite a few pot bunkers near and around the greens) will make you think otherwise, thanks to bobby bolin's creativity ! |

if a picture is worth a thousand words, then no need, this time (ha, ha !), to go into a lot of details as micko posted quite a few pictures which will show you that this well-designed royal pines (real) course, pretty to look at, is not overly difficult, despite plenty of lakes, spread mostly along the fairways on both sides. this par 72 is, in fact, a combination of two courses, with the first 9 holes coming from the green course, with my favorites being the par-4 4th, with its green set next to the lake (on the left), and the par-3 5th, along the lake (on the left), offering a really nice panoramic view as you reach the green. i also like the par-4 7th hole, with its fairway framed by two lakes linked by a small creek over which you will have to hit your approach to reach the green, and the par-5 9th, with its green, surrounded behind by more water. coming back (on the gold course), i like the par-5 12th hole, with the first part of the fairway, hugging a lake on the left, and its green set next to another elongated lake to watch for (on the right), and the par-3 16th, with a tee shot over part of a small elongated lake (in the shape of a duck’s head in front of the green). overall, as you will see in the following link below, micko did a very good job recreating this royal pines course (take a look at the racv hotel...) and if you can avoid quite a few bunkers near and/or around the greens, you should finish with a decent scorecard on this royal pines course before heading (if you are not too tired), to the nearby... surfers paradise !

i don't play too many fantasy courses, but this one is a keeper. it isn't terribly difficult, but if you end up on the wrong side of the slopes - on the green and around the green - you can end up with a big number. i'm unsure if m.g.a hoover is jimi, so i'll just thank both of them! enjoyed the round. |

a very enjoyable course, pretty to look at with its meandering river and wooded hills and quite challenging, with plenty of elevation changes, slanted (or sloped) fairways, strategically-placed elongated bunkers, and with quite a few tricky greens, especially on your way back. on the front 9, i like the left dogleg par-4 opening hole, downhill all the way with a fairway set between trees (on the left, with an elongated bunker in front, midway), and a big hill (on the right), and the similar left dogleg par-5 3rd, with a downhill tee shot landing past two elongated bunkers (left and right) and an uphill approach over some deep rough on your way to the green. the next two holes are nice too, with the par-4 4th, being slightly uphill all the way (with beautiful autumn foliage around), and the par-3 5th, needing a blind and downhill tee shot to reach the green, set next to the river behind. on the long left dogleg par-5 6th hole, hugging the river (on the right), you will have to avoid an elongated bunker (on the right), midway, and another one, a little bit further (on the left), before hitting a tough approach toward the green, partially hidden by trees (on the left) and guarded by two big bunkers in front. then, after the short par-4 7th, along the river (on the right), and the par-3 8th holes, with the river behind the green, you will walk over to the pretty right dogleg par-5 9th, with a couple of bunkers midway (left and right) on the slanted fairway along the river (on the right), and more bunkers in front of the steeply-elevated green. coming back, you will start with the scenic par-3 10th hole, with a blind and downhill tee shot over the river flowing across, and with four bunkers surrounding the green, then move on to the very tricky left dogleg par-5 11th, with a blind and uphill tee shot landing near an elongated bunker and a narrow gap between trees, through which you will have to hit a long approach to reach the green. the right dogleg par-5 13th is another challenging hole, with a slightly-downhill tee shot landing between trees (on the left) and an elongated bunker (on the right), and a blind second shot over the fairway winding its way to a steeply-downhill green (set next to the river), and is followed later on by the picturesque par-3 15th, with a blind tee shot over a big pond (with deep rough and reeds to the left, next to the river, further left) landing onto a green, sloping off on the edge. then, after the short left dogleg par-4 16th hole, with a blind and uphill tee shot toward the elevated and sloped green (hard to reach with trees on the left), and the par-4 17th, with its steeply-downhill fairway, and a big elongated bunker to watch for (midway on the left and ending near the green, with the river behind), you will finish with the nice and challenging right dogleg par-5 18th, with a downhill tee shot over trees (midway on the right), landing between two elongated bunkers behind, and a very tricky approach toward the elevated green, over a big pond (with a couple of trees, in front). nine days after releasing the isla... corona course in 2020, wild turkey takes us, this time, down the valley, with this nice par 73 where you will have to be patient and use your brain before hitting your shots if you want to score well. so, pack up your bags and grab a beer before losing your... beer belly walking up and down this corona valley course ! |

well, it must be my lucky day again as i found another course from cello that i like, maybe because it is supposed to be located in the... irish hills ! with its nice plantings and rocky hills (and outcrops), this par 72 is quite pretty but it is also very challenging, with steep elevation changes, plenty of blind shots, a few water hazards, and a finishing stretch with (especially) par-5 holes, very hard to figure out, if you want to break par. thankfully, the front 9 is a little bit “easier”, even though you might think otherwise after staring at the nice but tough left dogleg par-5 1st hole, with its rollercoaster fairway and its very long and blind second shot over deep rough and shrubs downward to the slanted green. after enjoying the par-3 2nd hole and its steeply-downhill green (with no bunker in sight !), you will reach the “very sheep” and beautiful par-4 3rd, with plenty of... sheep grazing around the narrow and downhill fairway, framed by high cliffs near and around the green, before walking over to the right dogleg par-5 4th, with a blind and steeply-downhill tee shot and a long, blind and uphill second shot toward the green, set on a plateau. like plenty of cello’s courses, you will find, on the goregous par-3 5th hole, your island green (this time, surrounded by a rocky hilltop), reachable with a blind and downhill tee shot over plenty of deep rough and shrubs, and follow up with two right dogleg par-4 holes, the 6th, uphill all the way, with a rollercoaster fairway, split halfway in the corner by deep rough and shrubs, and the 7th, with a fairway winding its way up until the right corner, next to a big bunker, and a blind and downhill approach toward the undulating green. you will finish the front 9 with the pretty and steeply-uphill par-3 8th hole, with a green surrounded halfway by a small rocky hilltop, and the very long (more than 620 yards) and straight par-5 9th, uphill all the way, with a rollercoaster and narrow fairway to deal with. coming back, you will start with the straight par-4 10th hole, with an uphill tee shot over deep rough landing down onto a narrow fairway and a green, surrounded by a high rocky hilltop, then face the pretty and wide open par-3 11th, with its panoramic view of the valley and a green set on a small rocky plateau, with a bunker down in front. but on the very tough par-5 12th hole, you can forget about getting an eagle : after an uphill tee shot landing onto a serpentine and narrow slanted fairway (not far from a crescent-shaped bunker, midway), and a blind and long downhill second shot over a wide ditch, filled with big shrubs and small trees, you will need to hit a short approach to reach the green, quite narrow at the entrance, with another rocky hilltop all around. the par-4 13th hole, uphill all the way, is no pushover either, with a blind tee shot over trees on a hilltop and a green, surrounded by a small rocky wall, unlike the nice par-3 14th, with a downhill tee shot landing past a big rocky outcrop, all across in front of the green. your final scorecard might be determined by the beautiful but very tricky right dogleg par-5 15th hole where, after hitting a blind and steeply-downhill tee shot landing onto a slanted fairway (all along a big hill on the right), and short of a small and deep pond in a rocky crater in the middle, you will need to fire a very long and uphill second shot (with deep rough, shrubs and a few trees in between) to try to reach the green, set on a rocky plateau. as if you were not challenged enough, the unusual-looking right dogleg par-4 16th hole might add to your misery, with an uphill tee shot over a big elongated pond landing onto one of the rocky plateaus, and an uphill approach to the elevated green, surrounded by five pot bunkers, over more rocky outcrops. fortunately, the pretty downhill par-3 17th hole should provide you with a birdie opportunity if you can hit your blind tee shot past a few rocks surrounding the green in front, before finishing with the “hard-to-figure-out” right dogleg par-5 18th, with an uphill tee shot over an elongated pond (surrounded by a rocky barrier), landing onto a narrow fairway (next to a big rocky outcrop on the left), a blind second shot over the big hill landing down, and a third shot toward the elevated green. unlike most of cello's courses, this hiberian hills is less eccentric (even if the "fly-by" option on some holes won't help you out on some of them), and quite enjoyable, provided that you can "go over the hills" and still remain young at heart... |

a delightful surprise, especially considering that this was krp designes’ second course only (after copper head country club), with a pretty mountainous panorama (next to a lake) and very challenging with plenty of narrow fairways, well-placed water hazards, and greens, often hidden by big bushes and/or small trees. you will start your journey with two right dogleg holes, with my favorite being the par-5 1st, downhill all the way, with a green, too far to reach on your second shot because of a lake winding its way near it (on the right, with an unusual lighthouse, next to a small house), over which you will have to hit your final approach. then, after the left dogleg par-4 3rd hole, where you will need to hit an uphill tee shot to reach the fairway (with a river running all along on the right), and a slightly downhill approach to the green, you will move later on to the straight “do-or-die” par-4 5th, where choosing the right club to tee off will be crucial if you want to avoid landing into the river (flowing on the right and ending midway across the fairway) before hitting your approach to the green, surrounded by four bunkers (with three of them in front). two downhill holes follow, with narrow fairways : the par-6th bends to the right, with a second shot over rough and bushes not too far in front of the undulating green, whereas the par-4 7th goes left, with a challenging approach toward the green, with small trees in the corner hiding it. finally, after the uphill par-3 8th hole, with a narrow path through the fairway leading to the green, you will walk over to the pretty right dogleg par-4 9th, with a downhill tee shot and a blind approach to the elevated and slanted green (with an imposing sporting clubhouse behind and a “king-size” swimming pool (on the far right). the back 9 starts with a big bang, with the very long right dogleg (more than 630 yards) par-5 10th hole, downhill all the way, with a narrow fairway and a small elongated lake (with a few small rocks in the middle) not too far from the green (surrounded by vegetation), impossible to reach on your second shot, forcing you to play it safe. the next three holes are a little easier in comparison, with the par-3 11th, needing a blind and slightly-downhill tee shot to land onto the green (set next to a small lake on the right and behind), unlike the straight par-4 12th, with its downhill fairway hugging a big cliff (on the right) and the right dogleg par-4 13th, again downhill all the way, with a narrow fairway hugging a river, on the left... on the downhill left dogleg par-4 14th hole, you will have to watch out for the wide lake on the left (and a big rock in the corner of the undulating fairway) and avoid another small rock, guarding the front of the green, before moving over to the scenic and downhill par-3 15th, with a tee shot over the lake landing onto the green (with that clubhouse again on the other bank on the left). another downhill hole awaits you with the right dogleg par-4 16th, with an undulating and sloped fairway, and a tough and blind approach over trees hiding the elevated green, followed by the beautiful left dogleg par-4 17th, with a tee shot over a small island in the middle of a wide lake (mostly on the left of the fairway), and a slightly-elevated green. you will complete your round with the nice right dogleg par-5 18th hole, downhill all the way, with a little slope in the middle of the fairway (on the right, next to a wide lake) and a very tough and long second shot over big bushes, hiding the green, guarded by a small elongated bunker in front. needless to say, this well-designed and scenic par 72 is a definite keeper and if you can manage to putt well on all those undulating greens and break par, you will have enjoyed your ride and be allowed to dive into that gorgeous swimming pool to celebrate and feel like a... king ! |

with the beautiful sedona mountains as a backdrop, this par 70 is pretty to look at and quite challenging with plenty of trees and high reeds to deal with, not to mention elongated bunkers and meandering rivers/creeks over which you will have to hit shots to reach the greens. the front 9 starts with the par-5 1st hole, with a tee shot over a twisting river (with, unfortunately, a few trees planted in it !) landing onto a winding fairway and a tough approach over more trees, partially hiding the green, surrounded by three big bunkers. after the par-3 2nd hole, and its blind tee shot over a big elongated pond, and the right dogleg par-4 3rd, with a winding creek flown over twice in order to reach the green (surrounded by… dwarf trees !), five of the last six holes are left doglegs ! on the par-4 4th hole, you will need to hit a tee shot over a u-shaped creek, before “enjoying a break” on the very tough par-3 5th, with a blind tee shot over trees flying over a winding river twice in the direction of the hidden green. then, after the par-4 6th, with a tee shot over the twisting creek, you will move on to another left dogleg, the par-4 7th, with a tee shot landing between trees (on the left) and a small creek (midway, on the right) and an approach toward the green, surrounded by a big bunker in front and with more water behind. out of the last two left doglegs, the par-4 8th and the short par-5 9th, i prefer the latter, quite challenging with a tee shot over water branching out left and right, and a long approach toward the green, with a big mound (on the right) and quite hard to reach on your second shot... two of the first three holes, on the back 9, are par-3s, starting with the pretty downhill 10th hole, with a blind tee shot over a small pond in the middle of the fairway, followed by the beautiful par-4 11th, with a meandering river over which you will have to hit your tee shot (with tall trees in the way) and your approach to get to the green, and the par-3 12th, with a blind tee shot over a winding lake downward to the green. other standout holes are the right dogleg par-5 13th, with a blind tee shot over deep rough, landing between trees (on the left) and a meandering river (on the right), and a long second shot over water again in the direction of the steeply-elevated green, and the short par-4 15th, with a tee shot over a serpentine river, landing onto an elevated fairway (with big sandy areas on both sides) and a short downhill approach over the water again to reach the green, framed by two elongated bunkers. you will finish your round with the picturesque and straight par-4 16th hole (seen on the above picture) with a tee shot landing onto an island fairway, lined up with trees, and a second shot dropping onto an island green, before walking over to the par-3 17th, with a blind and downhill tee shot over a wide lake, landing onto an elevated green, and the left dogleg par-4 18th, with a blind tee shot over a high hill, filled with trees and high reeds, and a second shot toward the green. overall, despite some nice vegetation (beautiful red flowers, unusual... dwarf trees near the greens), you might feel a little bit claustrophobic, at times, with plenty of thick trees in the way of some of your shots on this dragon at sedona course, nicely-designed by filb120870, despite a couple of displaying bugs... |
