A classic course, but with beautiful snow-capped mountains to gaze at, lots of tree-lined undulating fairways, nice plantings, with some meandering streams, a few ponds and lakes, and a nicer and tougher front 9.
On this par 71, I like the pretty par-3 2nd hole, with plenty of deep rough and bushes on both sides of the “fairway” and an elongated bunker to the left of the green (with plenty of trees behind), and the approach on the right dogleg par-4 3rd, more wide open but where you need to hit a blind and slightly-downhill second shot to reach the green, while making sure to avoid the nice small stream across in front (with a few rocks in).
If the par-5 4th hole is not overly difficult (as it is “almost straight”), it is quite nice with the mountains facing the tee box and its undulated tree-lined fairway, but the par-3 5th is more scenic with its small pond on the right of the sloped green, surrounded by trees.
The left dogleg par-4 6th hole is nice too with a tee shot over deep rough and a second shot over a serpentine stream ending in front of the green (on the left), whereas the left dogleg par-5 7th is very long (more than 630 yards), with an undulating fairway and an elevated green, hard to reach on your second shot.
Then, after the more wide-open par-4 8th hole, with a downhill tee shot and an uphill approach to the green, you will finish the front 9 with a left dogleg par-4, slightly uphill all the way, with a tee shot landing onto a wide fairway, with two elongated bunkers in the middle and a green, this time, not to hard to reach !
The back 9 starts with the nice par-3 10th hole, slightly downhill and with nice open land on the far right and continues with the challenging par-5 11th, with an undulating fairway bending to the left, then to the right, making your second shot quite tough if you want to reach the green, set on a small mound, partially hidden by trees on the right.
The par-3 12th hole, facing the mountains, is beautiful, with trees on the left all the way to the green, and with a big elongated pond, halfway, ending near it on the left, and is followed by a few holes with wide fairways and not too difficult, except for the approach to the left dogleg par-4 14th, where you will have to watch out for the small elongated lake on the left of the green.
Finally, after the left dogleg par-4 17th hole, and its heavily-undulating fairway, you will enjoy the very picturesque left dogleg par-5 18th, quite long (almost 630 yards) and where, after hitting a big tee shot over plenty of deep rough and bushes to reach the very wide and undulating fairway (with a small road and a big parking lot on the right), you will need to hit another long shot over more rough and bushes across the tree-lined fairway, down a slope to get close to the green.
With great mountain views and wooded areas, Witch Hollow at Pumpkin Ridge 2019 is fun to play with some nice and challenging holes (especially on the front 9), even if it is not one of the most difficult courses you will ever play, and is definitely worth keeping in my book, thanks to MSR Golf !
I just wished I could have scored... a hole in one in order to drive away in one of the three cars, seen on the 1st and 18th holes...
