Course Architect Comments

Royal Lytham and St Annes is not your traditional link style British Open course. The course is not located by the ocean but instead is surrounded by suburban housing, it breaks design rules by starting you off with a par 3, and then later hits you with back to back par 5s - but a more ruthless examination of your golfing abilities you are unlikely to find. Bernard Darwin summed the course up quite well... "hit your ball to the right place and the way to the hole is open to you, but hit your ball to the wrong place and every kind of punishment, whether immediate or ultimate, will ensue." Enjoy
