Gulf Wing Island is a small, isolated piece of land located 20 miles off the southwestern coast of Martha's Vineyard. Until 1980, it served as only a small outpost for the Coast Guard and an occasional boater who wanted to get away from the crowd.
This all changed when a group of investors bought all but the lighthouse and keeper's quarters from the government and set out to build an eighteen hole golf course.
Gull Wing Golf Links, a links style PAR 71 public course, was the result of their investment.
After severe gales and storms from the Winter of 2003 had completely destroyed the 15th island hole, The Gull Wing Golf Association had to shut down the course for repairs in 2004. During the repair process they decided to make improvements to the course which included creating a helicopter landing area, modifying the layout, adding more trees to make the course more parkland in nature, etc. in order to draw more golfers and hopefully have some amateur or even pro events come to the island. They hired a fledgling group of course architects (Acme Golf Architects Inc.) for the job.
A.G.A.In's primary goal was to make the course more competitive by adding length to the holes it could and plant more trees. They lucked out when the airport on Martha's Vineyard decided to expand and in doing so removed several acres of mature trees. The Gull Wing Golf Association paid to have the trees transported to the island and A.G.A.In began to plant them. After several delays, the project was finally finished in time for the 2021 golf season and the new Gull Wing Island Golf was unveiled.
Greenskeeper Hal Duff and course pro Edwin Masterson were the first ones to play the new course and they commented, "much better. It is more competitive and should be a challenge for all golfers."
