The Atlanta Athletic Club was chartered in 1898 by a group of young men were seeking a place where they could enjoy indoor and outdoor athletics with their business associates and friends. Their original downtown club was located on Edgewood Avenue. In 1908 the club hired its first athletic director, John Heisman?of Heisman Trophy fame.
The great golfer, Bobby Jones, grew up playing golf at the East Lake Country Club, which the club built in 1906. Bobby Jones became the world?s most famous amateur golfer and his career culminated with the Grand Slam of golf in 1930.
The downtown club outgrew its location twice and in 1924 built a 10-story building on Carnegie Way. The Carnegie Way building grew to include an indoor pool, dining rooms, barbershop, ballrooms, men?s grill and 60 overnight accommodations for members and their guests. Dancing on the rooftops was a very popular attraction, especially during the hot Atlanta summers.
The Club today in Duluth is a vibrant hub of activity for families interested in athletic and social opportunities in one magnificent location.
In 1976 the club hosted the first of many championships on its Highlands course, the U.S. Open. Jerry Pate won that championship and was followed by Larry Nelson in the 1981 PGA. Betsy King won the 1990 US Women?s Open on the club?s Riverside course. On Highlands, David Toms won the 2001 PGA Championship. The Atlanta Athletic Club will again host the PGA Championship in 2011.
