This course could have been spectacular, with its nice rugged mountains as a backdrop, palm trees and big lakes to deal with (not to mention its canal), and its pretty residential areas all around but, unfortunately, a few displaying bugs with the mountains "spoiled" that first impression... After a wide-open and scenic dogleg par-4 opening hole, with some palm trees along the way, you will get your first eagle chance on the straight par-5 2nd, with a fairway lined up with nice villas and slightly-uphill all the way. You will then head for the pretty par-4 4th hole, where you will need to be careful with your approach to reach the green at the edge of a big elongated lake (but with an unusual sight of the mountains... moving !), before hitting a long tee shot over the lake again toward the green of the pretty par-3 5th, and getting another eagle opportunity on the par-5 6th hole, despite its small green. But the most gorgeous hole is the 7th, with a tee shot landing along a big lake on the right (ending two-thirds of the way), and its green, surrounded halfway by palm trees and with those big mountains beyond. You will finish with the nice par-4 9th hole, with its fairway hugging a lake, starting midway on the left and ending next to the green. The back 9 begins with the beautiful par-4 10th hole, until you start seeing the mountains... disappear (!), as some new ones “pop up” as you hit your tee shot over the wide lake, unlike on the par-5 11th, slightly-uphill all the way, where you might putt for an eagle again, before facing the pretty but “easy” par-3 12th, and its beautiful panoramic view of the lake and residential areas around the green. Then, after the par-4 13th hole, with a tee shot over the wide lake, hugging the fairway on the right, and a second shot toward the green (slightly to the right), another eagle shot awaits you on the par-5 14th, with its fairway, hugging a canal all along on the left, provided that you can hit a great approach over it to reach the small green, on the right ! The last four-hole finishing stretch is spectacular : on the par-3 15th, you will need to hit a downhill and blind tee shot along the mountains on the right to reach the green (with the canal on the left), just like on the par-4 16th hole, where your blind tee shot will fly over some bushes and the canal to land onto the fairway (slightly to the left), with a green, again, across the canal on the right. The par-3 17th hole is also very scenic with its elevated green, set between the mountains on the right and the canal on the left, and so is the left dogleg par-4 18th, with the fairway hugging the elongated lake and over which you will have to hit your two shots to reach the green. If this par 72 has some great scenic and memorable holes (especially on the back 9), you should finish with a low score (hopefully, just like David Duval's 59 !) if you can bag a few eagles along the way on all those par-5s and reach the greens, near the canal on the last few holes. But that won't "erase" those displaying bugs, making this CGX PGA West Palmer Private course not as gorgeous as it should have been...
