This nicely-designed course, with its wide fairways, is not as easy as it looks, with plenty of challenging approaches to the (sometimes small and undulating) greens, often with a little bit of water in front and a few elongated bunkers around. On the front 9, I like the par-4 1st hole, next to a road on the right, with a slightly-downhill tee shot over a small stream, near the tee box, and a slightly-uphill approach to the green (a little bit to the right), the par-3 4th, with a tee shot slightly-downhill over a little stream in front of the undulating green (with a nice panoramic view), and the par-4 5th hole, slightly-uphill with an approach shot over the serpentine stream again. But my favorite hole is the scenic par-3 7th, along a road on the right, with a slightly-downhill tee shot over a wide dirt area and a small stream in front of the green, surrounded by bunkers, with an interesting house (style-wise) behind ! The back 9 starts with the beautiful par-3 10th hole, with a big clubhouse to the right of the tee box and a downhill tee shot toward the small green, guarded by six bunkers diagonally in front (and another one behind). Then, after the par-4 11th and 12th holes, both with slanted fairways, with a second shot over another serpentine stream to reach the green on the first, and a stream to the left and ending midway on the latter, you will reach another par-3, the 13th hole, with nice villas partially surrounding the slightly-elevated green. On the short par-4 15th hole, you might be able to reach the green (with a little luck and some tail wind !), but you will have to watch for two elongated bunkers on both sides of the green, before heading for the nice right dogleg par-5 16th, with an undulating fairway hugging a road on the right and a tricky and long second shot toward the green, with a winding stream in front and on the sides, where you might be able to putt for an eagle. You will finish with the scenic right dogleg par-4 18th hole, with a stream all along on the right (and some few trees) and flowing in front and past the green behind, with two tall palm trees in the way, making your approach a little tricky. With nice plantings and some beautiful bunker work, this Wilshire Country Club is quite enjoyable and another proof of Bobby Bolin's designing talent...
