Set in Marana, Arizona, this desert course plays very smoothly and is well designed by the CGX team with, as expected, quite a few cacti, bushes and small trees to gaze at, and plenty of sandy areas filled with medium rough all around to go along with a nice small mountainous panorama. On the front 9, I like the straight but long par-5 1st hole, with a tee shot over some sand and rough, a few thin cacti and its slightly-elevated green, the scenic, but easy, par-3 3rd, with two big cacti on the right side of the tee box, and the par-4 4th hole, with a tee shot over a wide elongated lake. If the par-5 5th hole is pretty straight, you will need to hit two shots over some rough-filled areas to reach the green, guarded by a bunker in front, before moving later on to the straight and picturesque par-4 7th, with big cacti on both sides of the tee box, the mountains in front, and where you might catch a glimpse of some khaki-colored tents, midway (left and right), and an elevated green, with an elongated bunker to watch for, on the left... The par-3 8th hole is also pretty, with a tree with big branches on the left of the tee box, a slightly-uphill tee shot over deep rough, small bushes and trees (and more tents on the right side of the green), just like the par-4 9th, with a blind tee shot over quite a few cacti and medium rough landing onto an undulating fairway, with a green, slightly to the left. On the way back, I like the right dogleg par-5 10th hole, with a slightly-downhill tee shot and an uphill approach to the elevated green (with a small winding sandy area filled with a few bushes midway on the right, ending next to it), and the right dogleg par-4 11th, slightly-uphill all the way, with two shots over medium rough to reach the elevated green, with a few small bunkers around, mostly in front. The par-3 14th is another nice hole, with a blind (and slightly-uphill) tee shot over small trees and cacti, with a very nice panoramic view as you reach the green. Then, after the par-4 15th hole, with its big bunker on a small mound, in the middle of the fairway, and its elevated green, you will finish your round with the long left dogleg par-5 17th, with a slightly-uphill tee shot over more medium rough (and bushes) and a very long second shot toward the elevated green (with a bunker below on both sides), and the par-4 18th hole, slightly-uphill all the way with a tee shot over an elongated lake. Overall, if this par 73 is not the most difficult course you will ever play, it is quite enjoyable with its nice plantings and scenery, thanks again to the CGX team !
