This Cunningham Jungle Course is one Bobby Bolin’s best, and one of his toughest, with a great panorama (ocean, city skyline and small mountains) to gaze at, plenty of elevation and doglegs, along with some very tough holes with water hazards, beautiful canyons (filled with trees and/or bushes), not to mention quite a few tricky greens, hard to reach. After a nice left dogleg par-4 1st hole, with a tee shot over a small lake and an elongated sandy area right behind (to the right) and a slightly-downhill approach to the green (with a big canyon filled with trees behind), you will head for the very challenging left dogleg par-5 2nd, quite tricky, with a bunker across splitting, midway, the narrow fairway, set above two canyons (with the one on the left being deeper and covered with trees) and a steep downhill and blind approach to the green, with only a tall palm tree as a visual aid, in front on the right. Fortunately, the gorgeous par-3 3rd hole is not too hard, giving you time to admire all the colorful bushes and flowers all around and the little pond on the left of the green... The scenery then changes drastically on the very long (more than 660 yards !) right dogleg par-5 4th hole, with a beautiful panoramic view of the city skyline and the ocean facing you as you tee off downward a very undulating fairway, and all the way to the green, with four bunkers, halfway on the right, and a few more as you get close to the green on your third shot. The short (around 150 yards) par-3 5th hole is another beauty, with a downhill tee shot over a big lake with five bunkers around the green, and is followed by the par-4 6th, uphill all the way, with a small pond on the left, an undulating fairway, surrounded by plenty of bushes and a green, slightly to the left. The right dogleg par-4 7th hole, with its beautiful panoramic view from the tee box, comes back downhill the other way, with a slanted and undulating fairway (with trees lined up on the left and bushes on the right), and with a very steep and blind approach to the small green. If you are not afraid of heights, then you should be able to walk across the narrow suspended iron bridge (above a narrow and deep canyon) on your way to the downhill green on that pretty "biarritz" 8th hole (a par-3), before heading for the tricky right dogleg par-4 9th where, if you want to be on the safe side, you should hit your tee shot to the left of the fairway (away from the five bunkers on the right) in order to hit your approach shot over a wide sandy beach (with a little pool), surrounded by rocks, to reach the green, set on a rocky plateau, with more high rocks around, especially on the right. The back 9 starts with another nice downhill panoramic view from the tee on the par-4 10th hole, with quite a few bunkers in the middle and on the sides of the narrow fairway, halfway, and continues with the spectacular and very sharp right dogleg par-5 11th, only about 370 yards (!) long, but very tricky with a downhill tee shot, landing near a deep and wide tree-filled canyon on the right, making your second shot very tough if you want to try to reach its elevated green ! But, once again, just like the other two par-5 holes on the front 9, another par-3 follows, the 12th, quite scenic with an uphill tee shot flying over a canyon, filled with more bushes, landing onto a bunker-less wide green. Similarly, on the pretty left dogleg par-4 13th hole, you will need to hit a downhill tee shot over that canyon again to reach the fairway on the other side before reaching the elevated green with another shot over the canyon. Then, after the right dogleg par-4 14th hole, downhill all the way, with elongated bunkers on the right, midway, and all those nice colorful bushes further to the right (also seen on the 3rd hole) and behind the green, you will come back the other way with the magnificent and spectacular par-3 15th, with a stream coming down all along on the right and ending in a few small ponds, next to the green surrounded by those colorful bushes. The right dogleg par-5 16th is another pretty and very challenging hole, with a downhill tee shot and another risk/reward second shot over a wide canyon filled with plenty of bushes, toward the tiny green, hidden behind small hills and with a big bunker in front on the left. You will complete your round with the gorgeous left dogleg par-4 17th hole, with its elongated lake all along on the left (at the bottom of a high boulder with a few waterfalls), and its lone palm tree (right in front of the green), before teeing off on the easier par-4 18th, with a lone palm tree in the middle of the undulating and downhill fairway and a blind approach toward the green, with three bunkers around and a small lake on the left. Needless to say, this Cunningham Country Club Jungle course is a beauty with its layout and gorgeous plantings, and I can't imagine how much time Bobby Bolin must have spent designing it, for all of us to enjoy !
