A delightful course, with a nice ocean front, mostly visible on the first few holes, plenty of wide tree-lined fairways (often undulated and/or slanted), a lot of elevation changes and some challenging approaches to the greens, with well-placed bunkers and/or small water hazards. This par 72 starts with the pretty opening left dogleg par-4, with a blind and steep downhill tee shot, an undulated fairway and a tough second shot to the green, with 3 big bunkers in front, and a panoramic view of the ocean behind. On the par-4 2nd hole, uphill all the way to the green, you will have to be careful to avoid all the “bunker-like” small rocky areas on both sides of the fairway (considered unplayable if you land in there !), just like on the scenic par-3 3rd, with a steep downhill tee shot to the green, and the picturesque left dogleg par-4 4th hole, with a fairway above more rocky areas and a blind and downhill shot to the green. Then, after the par-3 5th hole, with more waste areas between the tee box and the green, guarded by more bunkers in front, the course moves inland with the right dogleg par-4 6th hole, slightly-uphill to the green and the nice right dogleg par-5 7th, slightly-downhill all the way with an undulated fairway and an elongated pond before the green, on the left. Both par-4 8th and 9th holes, on the other hand, are uphill, with a green slightly to the left on the first, and to the right on the latter... Coming back, I like the left dogleg par-4 10th hole, with a downhill tee shot landing onto a heavily-slanted fairway and a slightly-elevated green, the right dogleg par-5 11th, downhill all the way, with a blind tee shot, an undulated fairway and plenty of bunkers around the green, and the scenic par-3 12th hole, one of my favorites, with a blind and steep downhill tee shot, a small pond on the left below the green, and a nice panoramic view. Another gorgeous hole is the long (563 yards) par-5 14th, with a downhill tee shot landing onto a serpentine fairway, leaving you with a very tough approach to the elevated green, with a big elongated pond, right in front. On the par-3 15th hole, you will have to be careful to avoid the small pond on the right of the downhill green, before moving on to the right dogleg par-4 16th, downhill all the way but with a blind and steeper slope to the green, unlike the last two uphill holes, relatively “easy”. With its hilly landscape, nice seafront and beautiful trees, this CGX Spyglass Hill 2015 plays very smoothly, and is a nice one to keep, thanks to the CGX team, once again !
