Another great course from Micko, with a seldom-used gorgeous panorama, made up of small clay-colored rocky mountains, along with some hilly wooded ones, and quite challenging with undulating and/or slanted fairways, a few blind shots, water hazards and plenty of enormous bunkers and deep rough, mostly on the back 9. This par 72 starts with an opening par-5, with a nice panoramic view and a winding and undulating fairway, and is followed by the left dogleg par-4 2nd, with a blind and uphill tee shot, a big bunker in the corner, trees all along the fairway on the right, and another big elongated bunker in front, and to the right, of the green. The right dogleg par-4 3rd hole has a beautiful view of the valley in front and to the left from the tee box, a heavily-slanted tree-lined fairway on the right, three big bunkers on the left in the corner, and a blind tee shot toward the elevated green, with four more bunkers around. After the par-3 4th hole, with a downhill tee shot and another big bunker in front of the wide green and a great panoramic view as you reach it, and the par-4 5th, with a tee shot along the tree-lined undulating fairway on the left and a wide pot bunker behind the green, you will reach one of my favorite holes. The par-4 6th is beautiful and quite original with the mountains in front, a big L-shaped bunker downhill on the left, not far from the tee area, and more bunkers (with a little grass in the middle) further on the left side of the slanted fairway. The left dogleg par-4 7th hole, on another hand, has a downhill tee shot along the tree-lined fairway and an uphill shot to the elevated green, with only one bunker (!), unlike the left dogleg par-4 8th,, with a blind and downhill tee shot, next to a wide lake on the left, an elongated bunker on the right, midway through, and an approach shot over part of the lake to reach the green, with another big bunker on the right. The par-3 9th hole is pretty too, with a tee shot over a small lake and a nice and wide clubhouse behind, with plenty of parked cars behind. The back 9 starts with the right dogleg par-5 10th hole, with plenty of trees in the corner, two big bunkers behind, and a big lake on the other side, and an elevated green, and continues with another right dogleg, the par-4 11th, very different, with trees on the right and two enormous elongated bunkers (with plenty of deep rough) on both sides of the narrow and slightly-downhill fairway, halfway, with the left one ending to the left of the green. The par-4 12th hole is a left dogleg, with two big elongated bunkers (and deep rough) in the corner, and an elongated lake on the right of the narrow fairway, and two small bunkers on the left and behind the green, whereas the par-4 13th hole, quite nice, bends sharply to the right around a wide lake. The par-4 14th hole is downhill all the way with a tee shot next to the river on the left, and an approach shot over it as it runs across the fairway to reach the green, with a bunker in a form of a giant question mark on the right, and beautiful villas on a hilltop to the left. Then, after the nice par-3 15th hole, with a tee shot over a small creek across the fairway ending in the lake on the left of the green, you will face enormous bunkers again on the par-4 16th, halfway and almost all the way across the fairway, before reaching the green with a nice... practice range behind ! Finally, after the par-5 17th hole, quite scenic with, again, plenty of bunkers and deep rough in the middle of the fairway, and a lake behind the green, you will reach the pretty par-4 18th, with a slightly-downhill tee shot landing onto the tree-lined fairway on the left, with two elongated lakes on the right, and four more bunkers to welcome your (last) errant shot with “open arms” around the green, and its clubhouse behind ! Well-designed as usual by Micko, Red River is a definite keeper in my book, not only because of its great-looking panorama but also because of its variety and unusual challenging holes with all those bunkers...
