Loved the course, front 9 is wonderful...and then got to the back nine (with difficult holes and very fast greens)...and most all of the holes were on plateaus...so if you want to play it, and you're no better than I am, play it with normal greens. Sad. Loved the layout, the course itself is great. If the back nine greens had been like the front nine, it would be a fantastic course. Only my opinion, of course...

With steep elevation and not a single flat hole, this course is not for the faint-hearted... Well designed with some nice plantings, high rough, big bunkers (some of them round), this par 72 will punish you if you gamble too much on some short holes. The steep downhill dogleg par-4 1st hole, quite short (about 315 yards), with trees and high rough in the corner on the left side and bunkers on the right, will give you an idea of what you will be "up" to... so to speak ! After a nice up-and-down right dogleg par-4 2nd hole, and an uphill par-3 3rd, with five round bunkers near the green, the left dogleg par-5 4th hole, with its nice downhill panoramic view from the tee box and plenty of trees and high rough in the corner (on the left side) is quite tough, as the elevated green is hard to reach on your second shot. Your first look at the crater lake will take place on the par-5 6th hole, after a... blind tee shot all the way downhill, where you will see it on the left side : with trees, high rough and bunkers on both sides of the fairway in front, it is simply superb ! The par-4 8th hole, similar to the 6th, is also very nice with its uphill tee shot to the steep downhill green, slightly to the right, with a big bunker not far from it (and the lake on the left side). The back 9 starts with the tricky par-3 10th hole, with a blind tee shot downhill to the green and its little slope, and is followed by the scenic par-4 11th, again similar the 8th, but much steeper (and with an elongated bunker near the lake on the left side), and the par-4 12th hole, also very steep but where, with a little luck, you can reach the green with your driver... Teeing off from the sharp right dogleg par-5 13th hole will offer you an unusual sight as you will face the two big pillars of the giant stairway leading down to the rollercoaster fairway and its elevated green ; but with trees and high rough in the right corner, this hole is no pushover either ! Thankfully, the down-and-up right dogleg par-4 14th hole and the downhill left dogleg par-4 15th, while nice, will offer you some birdie opportunities, just like the beautiful par-3 16th hole, with a blind tee shot to the downhill green and its panoramic view of the crater lake, provided you can master its tricky little slope... The last two holes are very tough : the par-5 17th is spectacular with a blind tee shot down a twisted fairway but you will have to be very careful on your second shot if you want to reach the elevated green : not only trees and high rough are in the way in the corner, but the green has a very steep slope in front of the flag. To give you an idea of how crucial this hole can be, I conceded it during my round, but... birdied it in pratice afterwards !!! As for the par-4 18th hole, unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to hit your tee shot over the trees : in fact, finding the fairway is already quite a challenge (!), despite the "fly by" camera view ! Your best bet, then, will be to hit your tee shot to the right of the trees and land in the rough and you will have a clear view of the flag... Because of that "designing bug" on the last hole, my round was somewhat "spoiled" on an otherwise great-looking course but, with a few minor adjustments on some holes (and getting rid, maybe, of those small little walls which could make the course even nicer), Crater Lake could be even more picturesque. In the meantime, Crater Lake proved, once again, that Wild Turkey Design has a great imagination and a lot of talent !
