A very challenging course, with a beautiful ocean, breathtaking views, plenty of elevation changes, some rocky terrain, a few sharp doglegs, nice vegetation and a very scenic and tougher back 9.
This par 72 starts with a nice right dogleg par-4 hole and continues with the very scenic par-3 2nd, with a panoramic view from the tee box and a green, downhill on another mound, with plenty of trees and bushes behind (and below).
The par-4 3rd hole is short (about 360 yards) and straight uphill all the way, with a tee shot landing onto a high rocky plateau, followed by a steeply-elevated approach to the green, unlike the par-5 4th, where you will to hit a nice downhill tee shot (while admiring the view of the mountain range) before hitting an uphill approach to the green, slightly to the left with four bunkers around (and a first view of the volcano, way to the left).
One of my favorite holes is the spectacular par-3 5th, with a downhill tee shot over a small “canyon”, filled with trees and bushes (and a dangling suspended bridge, on which I am not sure I want to venture...), and the dormant (or is it, with all that red lava ?) volcano, further back !
The following par-4 6th hole is quite short (about 335 yards) and very challenging, with a bunker and a lone palm tree in the middle of the fairway, a small pond further to the right and another bunker... and pond across in front of the green with, again, the volcano to “admire”.
On the par-4 7th hole, you will need to hit a slightly-downhill tee shot and a tough second shot over the small canyon (with that suspended bridge on the left), before heading for the right dogleg par-5 8th, with a slanted fairway next to the wide canyon (filled with trees and bushes) on the right, and a very difficult (and long) shot to the green, way to the right, near the edge of the canyon, with a few bunkers around.
If you enjoy the front 9, wait until you face the back 9 ! After a right dogleg par-5 10th hole, with an uphill tee shot landing onto a wide fairway and a very long approach to the elevated green, with four small bunkers in front, you will love the gorgeous par-3 11th, with the green on a rocky plateau with the volcano right behind !
The short (about 345 yards) and straight par-4 12th hole will take you to “bunkerland”, with a downhill tee shot with three big bunkers in the middle of the fairway, five more in front of the green, set on a small mound, and another one behind, unlike the next few holes where you will be in “dreamland” (or “nightmareland” depending..).
The left dogleg par-5 13th hole is gorgeous, with three bunkers in the middle at the end of the fairway, before a big and blind second shot way down the cliff with a very wide lake on the right (with plenty of small islands) and a wide green.
The left dogleg par-4 14th hole is superb too, with a downhill tee shot landing onto the first of three small “island-fairways” and, if you are in a gambling mood, a long second shot to try to reach the green, set on a high rocky plateau !
The par-4 15th hole is quite short (about 330 yards), with a narrow fairway in between two big lakes way below and a green, slightly to the right (with a few bunkers in front), and is followed by the picturesque par-3 16th, with a tee shot over a wide lake and the nice view of the ocean further back.
Then, after the left dogleg par-4 17th hole, with an uphill tee shot with trees on the left, the canyon on the right, a slanted fairway and a downhill approach to the green, with three big bunkers in front, you will have one last challenge as you face the par-3 18th, with a steeply-uphill tee shot to the green, set on a rocky plateau, with a... small v-shaped pond in front, before heading for the small clubhouse behind...
With plenty of challenging and beautiful holes, this Cliffs course is not for the faint-hearted, especially on the back 9, but it is definitely worth playing and keeping before (or after) heading for the other Cunnigham Bay course, also designed by Bobby Bolin !

Hole 14 reminds me of some of the classic fantasy holes on The Predator, Emerald Dragon, The Highlands and Central Park. It is very cool and takes a steady hand and good swing to keep from getting wet. I was able to get -8 on the back nine and score -11 with breezy conditions and normal greens. The course has a few issues, but is definitely a keeper.
