A nice and challenging course, with lots of trees, tall grass, bushes and flowers all along the fairways, some elevation changes, and a few blind shots to reach the greens, with a few of them surrounded by steep slopes. You will start your round with three left dogleg holes, with the par-5 2nd, being the toughest, with its steeply-elevated green, hard to reach on your second shot (with trees in the corner hiding it), and follow with another tough hole, the right dogleg par-4 4th, with trees in the corner and more deep rough and flowers on a small hilltop (on the left), over which you will have to try to hit your tee shot if you want to have a clearer approach to the green. The par-3 5th hole is a little bit scary, with its blind tee shot over a downhill and tiered fairway landing near three wide bunkers surrounding the green, unlike the par-4 6th, straight and pretty, with a second shot over a river crossing diagonally and a green, surrounded again with tall grass and blue flowers. The next three holes are nice too : the 7th is a par-4, along a serpentine river (on the right), with bushes and flowers on its edge, and a green, slightly to the left, the 8th is a par-3, with more bushes and flowers on both sides of the tee, and an elevated green (with a big slope around it), and the 9th is a right dogleg, with a downhill tee shot over trees in the corner and a long, blind and uphill second shot toward the undulated green. The back 9 starts with the par-4 10th hole, where you will need to hit a blind and downhill tee shot to land short of a meandering river, before hitting your approach over it toward the green, and is followed by the right dogleg par-4 11th, whose fairway is set on a plateau, leaving you with a short approach to the green. Then, after the left dogleg par-5 12th hole, and its fairway lined up with bushes, flowers and trees and its blind approach over a small mound landing downward to the green, you will move later on to the cute par-3 14th, where you will have to hit your tee shot over a small pond across in front of the green, while admiring all the tall grass and flowers all around. But my two favorite holes are the nice and risky left dogleg par-4 16th, with a tee shot landing onto a fairway going steeply downhill, two-thirds of the way, leaving you with a short approach to the undulated green (next to the winding river behind), and the very pretty and quite challenging right dogleg par-5 18th, along the river (on the right), with a blind and downhill tee shot over trees and a very long and risky second shot over the river to try to reach the steeply-elevated green. With its beautiful valley, filled with trees and nice vegetation, you will have to be patient and think twice before hitting some of your shots on this Birchdale course, fun to play and well designed by M.G.A Hover !
