Over the years, Cello has been known for his wild imagination and designing talent and also for his fantasy courses, sometimes too “unreal” for some. This par 72 is no exception, with a gorgeous landscape (around those four lakes), and some greens looking, at first, almost impossible to reach, barring miracle shots ! And if you add plenty of sheep grazing on the hills and an... immobile seaplane (!), quite low above your head sometimes, you end up with a very “unusual” course, quite eye-candy with its vegetation, rocks, hilltops and water hazards, but also scary with its steeply-downhill shots. In fact, describing this course is not easy with so many twists on every hole, but one thing is for sure : the illustrating picture, in no way, resembles its topography ! So, enjoy the first few holes while you can, with the par-4 1st, and its tee shot over a wide lake (and an island green in the middle), and its uphill approach, with a beautiful panoramic view, as you reach the green, and the par-3 2nd, with a blind tee shot downward to the island green, with plenty of sheep on the edge of the lake. On the left dogleg par-5 3rd hole, you will get your first close look of that seaplane, with your tee shot over the lake flying next to it (!), before hitting a long second shot over another lake toward the green, with a nice castle far behind, before moving on to the risky left dogleg par-4 4th, where you will have to choose your club carefully to either land downward, short of the lake, or on the small island fairway, before hitting another shot over the lake again to reach the green and its nice shrubs and trees behind. Then, after the par-3 5th hole, downhill to the green, with plenty of deep rough and sand in between, you will head to the nice downhill left dogleg par-5 6th, with an uphill tee shot landing between two big lakes, leaving you with a tough approach over the lake (on the left) to reach the green and its very low "standing-still" seaplane (watch out for your head !)... On the long (almost 270 yards) and beautiful par-3 7th hole, with plenty of sheep standing in the deep rough next to the lake, you will enjoy the nice view of the round island green, surrounded by rocks, before moving on the left dogleg par-4 8th, with an uphill tee shot over deep rough landing onto a tree-lined fairway and a challenging and blind approach over the lake toward the gorgeous green, surrounded halfway behind by a rocky wall, with plenty of vegetation on top. You will finish the front 9 with a very tough and pretty right dogleg par-5, with a tee shot over the lake landing onto a hilltop, overlooking another lake (with some trees below), and over which you will hit your blind second shot downhill to (hopefully) reach the island fairway and green. The back 9 starts with the tricky left dogleg par-4 10th hole, with a steeply-uphill tee shot over some deep rough landing onto a narrow tree-lined sloped fairway (with a big bunker on the left) and a blind and steeply-downhill approach over the lake to reach the island green, with two small bunkers on the sides and nice vegetation behind, on the left ! If the panoramic view from the tee box of the par-3 11th hole is gorgeous, wait until you see your hair-rising steeply-downhill tee shot land onto the island green, surrounded by big rocks, and the long (more than 610 yards) par-5 12th, with an uphill tee shot flying toward another hilltop above the lake, and a very long approarch toward an elongated and very narrow fairway, and its green at the tip, on the left ! The sharply-to-the-left dogleg par-4 13th hole is quite challenging, with a downhill tee shot landing onto a fairway along a high rocky hill on the left and a wooded hill on the right, and a second shot way downhill to the green, at the bottom of a big hill, and is followed by the pretty par-3 14th, with a tee box set at the bottom of high rocky hills, and a tee shot over the lake with a clear view of the green. You will then sweat all the way on the left dogleg par-5 15th hole, very scenic but quite scary, with a tee shot over the lake landing onto a narrow and winding island fairway, leaving you with a very long second shot over the water to reach the green, set above some sand and vegetation, in a little corner. Thankfully, the right dogleg par-4 16th hole is easier, with a steeply-uphill tee shot landing near two elongated bunkers on both sides of a wide fairway, and a pretty second shot over the lake toward the green (set on a rocky hill and surrounded by plenty of trees), just like the short (about 120 yards) par-3 17th, with a tee shot over more water landing onto a round and rocky island green. As you stand on the right dogleg par-5 18th hole, you might think you will be “off the hook” looking at its short yardage (less than 470 yards). Well, think again, as you will need to hit a perfect tee shot over the lake downward a narrow and twisting and undulating fairway, and pray for your long approach over more water to land onto its small island green... Needless to say, despite its beauty, this Hardings Lakeside GC is one of the toughest fantasy courses you will face but, if you take time to study your upcoming shots, you might enjoy it. As for me, call me a “masochist” if you will, but I did, thanks to Cello’s vivid imagination !
