On this 13th of August, I got... lucky discovering this gorgeous and challenging par 71 course, quite spectacular with its "Valley of the Gods" pano, designed by Bob Hiker (see above picture and more in the photo gallery), and its... red bunkers (which blend in very well with the pano), hard to avoid, at times, not to mention the water hazards and quite a few undulating or tiered greens. You will start your round with two left dogleg holes, the par-4 1st, with a big waste area and trees on the left of the fairway (and red bunkers in the corner), and another waste area to the left of the green (with a nice clubhouse behind it), and the par-5 2nd, with an elongated waste area (on the right), trees (on the left), and more bunkers, midway, making the fairway quite narrow, and leaving you with a tough and very long second shot if you want to reach the green (with another big elongated waste area ending next to it, on the left). The dogleg par-4 3rd is probably the toughest hole on this course, and you can forget about getting a birdie, as it bends very sharply to the right, with a blind tee shot above a waste area, diagonally across the fairway, landing near a serpentine lake and trees (on the right), and a green, impossible to reach on your second shot, with trees hiding it and water further behind ! You will then face the beautiful downhill par-3 4th hole, with a nice panoramic view as you reach the green surrounded, halfway, by a u-shaped waste area, before walking over to the par-4 5th, uphill all the way with a blind tee shot along trees on the left (and over a waste area), landing near bunkers, next to an elongated lake (on the right). On the slightly-uphill right dogleg par-4 6th hole, your tee shot will have to fly over a serpentine lake, with another waste area, midway on the right, before moving later on to par-5 9th, where you should have an eagle opportunity, after hitting a tee shot downward a narrow tree-lined fairway and a long approach toward the slightly-elevated green, guarded by two puzzle-shaped bunkers. Coming back, you will get a little "break" with some nice, but less difficult holes, such as the pretty par-3 10th, with a wide waste area between the tee box and the green, and the short and straight par-4 11th hole, where you should be able to reach the green with your driver in order to get an eagle or a birdie. On the pretty and very challenging right dogleg par-5 13th hole, you will have to be careful with your blind and uphill tee shot to avoid landing into a S-shaped lake, midway, before hitting a very delicate approach to reach the green, unlike on the much easier par-3 15th, downhill to the green. Then, after the right dogleg par-4 16th hole, with a tee shot landing onto a plateau and a second shot toward its slightly-elevated green, you will finish with two spectacular holes, the tough par-4 17th, with a straight (but blind) tee shot landing near trees (on the right) and a big S-shaped lake, over which your second shot will fly twice to reach the green, and the very scenic par-3 18th, with a great panoramic view (and the clubhouse, on the far left) and a tee shot flying over an elongated bunker all the way to the green, with another wide waste area behind. With its undulating fairways, thick trees (often partially hiding its magnificent panorama !), and all those big waste areas and well-placed bunkers, this Wastelands of Karma Way 2012 will definitely test your patience, and if you also don't... waste too many shots into the water, you should then have a good karma at the end of your round, and thank DannyD2004 for his very nice layout !
