Intrigued by the comments posted below, I decided to try my luck by playing this... Horseshoe Cove course and I must say that I have mixed feelings about it after completing my round. Why ? Simply because, despite a nice layout and some pretty views along the ocean, this par 73 needs some additional work in order to look better. Case(s) in point : if I agree that the textures used for the rocks and lava flows are not the best ever, I would have liked to see more smoothing done on the sandy areas at the bottom of the cliffs (they look too angular) but, most importantly (and no one noticed it !), seeing the waves crashing... from the cliffs back in the direction of the ocean (and not reaching it !) was totally unnatural ! It is a “shame”, as this course has some pretty holes, such as the dogleg par-5 4th, with a fairway bending sharply to the left and hugging the ocean cliffs, over which you will have to hit your second shot to reach the green (surrounded by a few bunkers, left and right), and the straight par-4 6th, with an uphill tee shot over the cove landing down a rollercoaster fairway and a second shot over some lava toward its elevated green. The straight and downhill par-5 8th is another standout hole, very scenic with a slanted fairway next to the ocean cliffs (on the left), and a nice lighthouse beyond the undulating green, and is followed by the right dogleg par-4 9th, back inland, with a downhill tee shot landing onto an undulating fairway and an uphill approach over a few trees and an elongated bunker behind, in the direction of the elevated green. Coming back, you will see those “waves” again on the nice right dogleg par-4 10th hole, with lava mounds all along the fairway (on the left) and the ocean (on the right), and on the gorgeous and downhill par-3 11th (my favorite hole), with a tee shot over the ocean and a small green set on top of the lava rocks... I also liked three other holes : the right dogleg par-5 14th needs an uphill tee shot landing down onto the fairway and a long downhill second shot over a big lava flow all the way across to reach the green, the par-3 16th is quite pretty, with a tee shot over the cliff toward the green, just like the left dogleg par-5 18th, quite challenging with the ocean on the right, plenty of small trees (on the left), an undulating fairway and a slightly-elevated green (with the lighthouse, further back). In summary, whether you bring your good luck charm or not, you will have to be careful with your approaches to the greens (with a few slopes around their edges), especially around all the holes set next to the ocean, if you want to finish with a decent scorecard on this Hunting Leopard’s interesting course (with some pretty wind-swept trees on top of the cliffs)...

Thanks for the comments all. I will improve on the sounds and textures (at least I'll try, some textures / types are quite difficult to find a good match).

Yes the rock texture libraries on a large area never come off well as it gives a tiled effect and gives a patterned look, I think there are a few other rock libs that are better

Playing this (very nice) course I wondered why the designer spoiled it (almost) all by that terrible lava rock. I fully agree with the other commentaters, Jackn and PhilT: what a pitty! I noticed before that most of the designers have problems with the rock formations (even some of the best!). Maybe a version two without that stuff.

Excellent layout and design with nice elevations and views of the coast line. The par three 11th is a standout hole. Smooth greens, and agree with the last comment that there may have been a better choice than the lava rock. Still all in all an excellent track and very enjoyable. Enjoyed the walk.

Nice layout and design and ran well, did not like the rock texture choice...there must be a better once? I saw the waves but no sound, no birds flying and no bird sounds...it needed it. BUT I still like the course
