Well, this... Elwell Trail course is quite nice, with some beautiful hilly panoramic views all along, and quite challenging, at times, with a few doglegs, with wide waste areas filled with deep rough and some well-placed rock outcroppings, not to mention a few tricky greens. On the front 9, my favorite holes are the gorgeous downhill right dogleg par-5 opening hole, with a green, surrounded by big bunkers, the left dogleg par-4 3rd, with a tee shot over a wide area filled by high rough and a sloped fairway downward to the green (nicer than the similar par-4 4th), and the downhill par-3 5th hole, with a nice panoramic view as you reach the green. The two right dogleg par-4 holes (6th and 7th) are quite nice too, with a small lake in front of an undulating green, and another lake far away in the horizon, on the first, and a tough tee shot flying above a wide area with more deep rough (and, hopefully, landing onto the fairway, set on a plateau), on the latter. I also like the tough downhill par-3 8th hole, with three different-sized bunkers guarding the green (to the left and in front). Another downhill hole awaits you on the par-4 10th, with a tee shot over an elongated wide area filled with deep rough (slightly on the left) landing onto a multi-tiered fairway, and an uphill approach toward the green (set on a high plateau), just like the par-5 12th hole, with a downhill tee shot landing short of an elongated area, filled with high rough, and over which you will have to hit your second shot to reach the green. The par-5 15th is another downhill dogleg hole, bending sharply to the left, with a small mound, filled with high rough, a few shrubs and two rock outcroppings (on the left), and a small elongated bunker in front and to the left of the green. Then, after the... downhill par-3 16th hole, with a wide area filled with deep rough between the tee box and the green, and the right dogleg par-4 17th, similar to the 7th, but with less elevation, with a big puzzle-shaped bunker in front and to the right of the green, you will finish with the pretty par-4 18th hole, with more rock outcroppings surrounded by high rough, in the middle of the fairway, midway, (leaving you with a choice of hitting your downhill tee shot to the left or to the right), and more deep rough to the right, leading to the green. Overall, if you have a feeling of “déjà vu” on a few holes, this par 72 is quite enjoyable and its pretty landscape and slight elevation changes make it worth to embark on its... trail, thanks to Hunting Leopard !
