This par 72 is one of the few winter courses available on this site and playing it will definitely offer you a different challenge if one of your shots ends up in the snow, as it will just drop there, making your following shot tougher to evaluate club-wise. You will also face another dilemma concerning the weather conditions : with fog, the course looks more wintry (as Jimbo63 suggested in the general info), but you won’t see the ball as well as you would, obviously, with the sun shining (not to mention the beautiful panorama designed by rlslay...) ! But no matter what you choose, you will enjoy the short and pretty right dogleg par-5 2nd hole, with a blind and uphill tee shot over snow, and a serpentine river running along the slanted fairway (on the right) and over which you will have to hit your approach toward the green. The par-3 4th hole is quite nice too, with a tee shot over a meandering lake, but I prefer the very scenic par-3 7th, with a small island in the middle of a lake and over which your tee shot will fly twice to reach the green. The last two holes are also quite challenging, starting with the nice right dogleg par-4 8th, with more small islands in the middle of another lake (on the right), a slanted fairway and a green, surrounded halfway by plenty of trees, and the short right dogleg par-5 9th, with a tee shot over more snow and a few trees, standing in the middle of the fairway, with a tiny creek behind, flowing into a wide lake (and more islands in the middle). On your way back, you will see just snow between the tee box and the green of the slightly-uphill par-3 11th hole, before walking over to the nice left dogleg par-4 12th, with a tee shot flying past an elongated lake (on the left) and trees near the edge (in the corner), partially hiding the fairway. Then, after enjoying a “break” with the right dogleg par-4 13th and straight par-4 14th holes, you will get a golden opportunity for an eagle on the par-5 15th, with a winding fairway, and a green, slightly to the right and reachable on your second shot. You will complete your round with three gorgeous holes : the par-4 16th is a left dogleg, with trees facing the tee box and an elongated lake, right behind (in the left corner) and an elevated green (with a beautiful panoramic view of another wide lake behind), and is followed by the pretty par-3 17th, with a blind tee shot over part a wide meandering lake toward the green, surrounded by snow, and the short dogleg par-5 18th, bending sharply to the right around a wide lake, and over which you will hit your tee shot and your approach to reach the elongated green, on the edge the lake. Needless to say, of all the winter courses that I have played so far, this Fontana Winter version is one of the best, which is no surprise, as it was designed by Jimbo63. But if you really want to see the best one, ever created, then I suggest that you take a look at the Laurentian Hills Winter course, designed by Quietly : not only the snow looks even better (with the ball reacting more like in a bunker when dropping in), but the lakes and ponds are totally icy (making your ball bounce) and you will see snow... falling as you reach the last couple of holes !
