With hazy and blue mountains as a panorama, this par 72 is pretty to look at with its wide-open fairways and tall thin trees planted all along, but with greens, often surrounded by water and well-placed bunkers, you better hit great approach shots if you don’t want to end up in trouble. On the right dogleg par-4 1st hole, you will need to hit a downhill tee shot while making sure to avoid the bunkers in the corner before aiming for the elevated green, whereas, on the par-3 2nd, your tee shot will fly over a lake and (hopefully) land on a green, surrounded by 7 bunkers ! Then, after the straight and short (about 350 yards) par-4 3rd hole, you will have to hit a very accurate (and long) approach shot on the right dogleg par-5 4th hole, if you want to reach the green, with a small meandering creek in front and three bunkers right behind it. While the par-3 5th hole is not too difficult with its wide green, it is quite scenic, with a big pond in front (and to the right) and a few bunkers and trees around, just like the straight par-5 7th, with a tee shot over a L-shaped lake and a green, again surrounded by trees. If the par-4 8th hole is nice, with a tee shot over deep rough and an approach shot over part of an elongated lake on the right of the green, so is the right dogleg par-4 9th, with bunkers in the corner and a nice little fence around a big pond on the right of the green, with a couple of houses behind. More water can be seen on the back 9, with one of my favorite holes being the challenging par-5 11th, with a very tough second and/or approach shot in the direction of its small green, over a meandering creek crossing from the right in front and to the left. The straight par-3 12th hole is pretty with a slightly-uphill tee shot over an elongated lake, and is followed by the similar par-4 13th, this time with a tee shot landing on the other side of the elongated lake (on the right) and a green, slightly to the left. On the left dogleg par-4 14th hole, you will need to hit your tee shot over a big pond before aiming for the green and seeing another small one in front (and to the right), with also two bunkers to watch for. Then, after the left dogleg par-5 15th hole, with bunkers mostly of the right side of the second half of the fairway, and the dogleg par-4 16th, slightly to the right, with an elongated lake to the left of the green, you will reach my other favorite hole, the par-3 17th, with a downhill island green and its beautiful panoramic view. Finally, the par-4 18th hole would not be nice without... two more elongated lakes, this time with deep rough in between (before the fairway) and a green, slightly to the right, with two small white houses behind. If the Calloway Lakes is a fantasy course, unlike the real Calloway Gardens, it has a natural look and is quite enjoyable, proving, once again, that over the years, ron717 has proven to be a pretty good designer !
