A very nice and challenging course, where you will have to think twice before hitting some of your shots, with plenty of elevation changes, lots of trees with thick branches (sometimes in the way), quite a few slanted or sloped fairways and greens, and some well-placed water hazards (with nice reeds in them) to gaze at and... worry about ! After a straight and uphill par-4 1st hole, with a heavily-slanted fairway near the green, and the right dogleg par-4 2nd, with a tee shot over thick trees in the corner, I like the left dogleg par-5 4th hole, with a downhill tee shot over some trees in the corner and a long second shot toward the elevated green, and the other left dogleg, the par-4 6th, with a steep and blind tee shot over a small pond, midway, landing onto a slanted fairway and another blind approach to the elevated and sloped green. Then, after the pretty par-3 7th hole, with a sloped green and nice flower beds behind, another noteworthy hole is the tough and very pretty par-5 9th, with a steep downhill tee shot landing in front of a big pond midway (with plenty of reeds) and a long uphill approach to the undulating green, slightly to the left. The back 9 starts with the nice left dogleg par-4 10th hole, with a slightly-uphill approach over a small creek crossing the fairway, two-thirds of the way, and continues with the very picturesque left dogleg par-4 11th, with the fairway set between a big elongated lake on the right and a small creek on the left, and the magnificent par-3 12th hole, with a tee shot over another reed-filled elongated lake, slightly to the right. Then, after the right dogleg par-4 13th hole, and the par-5 14th, with a winding and uphill fairway all the way to the green (slightly to the right), the three-hole finishing stretch is very nice. The par-3 16th is slightly-uphill, with an elongated lake behind the green on the left, and is followed by the toughest hole of this course, the right dogleg par-4 17th, uphill all the way, where you will need to hit a very accurate tee shot over an elongated lake (while avoiding thick branches in the way, on the right) in order to land onto the heavily-slanted fairway (without dropping your ball all the way down into a tiny and serpentine creek on the left), before aiming your second shot toward the green ! You will finish with the beautiful par-5 18th hole, with a tee shot downward an undulating fairway landing short of a big pond midway, and over which you will hit your second shot to reach the elevated green. This Cleghorn Plantation course, very well designed by lynnj163, will give you a run for your money as you will face plenty of challenging shots, and you will have to remain concentrated until the 18th green if you don't want to feel sorry looking at your scorecard at the end of your round !

Thanks for this fantastic course. I grew up about 40 minutes from there so I played this course quite a few times. I do have one question though as it's been 15 years or so since I played it. Did they switch the front nine and back nine? I seem to recall it being the other way around. I always remember that first tee shot being a squeeze cause you couldn't go too far right and if you were to long and left, you were blocked out by that big oak tree.

Well, I played this course, and although the original course is open in the first few holes from the clubhouse (I hope I'm not mixing it up with Fox Run or now called Byld Mountain), the holes are a realistic representation of the real course. I only wished I got to see the while plantation-style clubhouse coming in from the 10th & 18th holes. Good job.

I can't wait to play this course. I have a timeshare at Lake Lure, and this course is nearby. I play it everytime I am up there.

This course is excellent from a new designer. It is not a monster in length, but a track that you have to think about every shot from the tee box to the greens. Wrong side of the fairway or above the hole and you are in trouble. The green textures are excellent also.
