Two for two ! After the Larkhill Golf Course, John Rainey did it again with this beautiful, and pretty tough, par 73 course, where you will have your hands full with plenty of doglegs, water hazards, bunkers, gorse bushes and trees, sometimes in the way of the greens... With a hilly panorama blending in very well with the landscape, Woodtown Lodge looks pretty with its nice plantings... even with some bare land beyond some fairways. After a nice right dogleg par-4 1st hole, downhill to the green, the par-3 2nd is very picturesque with a little white house on the right, a big tree in front hiding the flag and a wide lake behind the green, with a small island in the middle ! A sharp dogleg par-4 awaits you on the gorgeous 3rd hole, with a tee shot over the wide lake to the right and a lone house facing the lake, not far from the green. I also like the par-4 4th hole, quite different with a big rock (!) right in the middle of the faiway and a very nice pond, with gorse bushes around it, near the green. The par-5 6th hole is another very sharp dogleg, with water on the right side, whereas the par-3 7th is gorgeous and quite tough, with trees hiding the green completely with an island in the middle behind them ! The back 9 has some scenic and challenging holes too, starting with the par-4 11th, with a creek zigzaggging across and on the right side of the fairway. The par-4 13th hole, on another hand, is a tough left dogleg with a very tiny green surrounded by bunkers, unlike the left dogleg par-4 14th, where the green is slightly elevated. The landscape changes again on the last few holes, with a beautiful and tricky par-4 15th hole, where you will have sweating palms after hitting your tee shot, as the narrow fairway is in between two lakes... Finally, after playing the nice par-3 16th hole, with its uphill green, you will finish your round with the sharp and beautiful left dogleg par-5 18th, hopefully landing your ball on the island green : up to you, then, to find a way to go and putt it... since there is no small bridge to reach it ! With very tough par-3 holes, plenty of water to deal with and a great variety of shots, this course is another keeper in my book, proving, once again, that John Rainey is among the best designers around...

Very much enjoyed playing this course. Very playable but still a challenge with the well placed hazards. The greens were nice without being too tricky. This course was also very pleasing to the eye. Great job John, very well done.

Very nicely done course, challenging with the imaginative use of natural obstacles.I still prefer Molloway as a lay-out, but this is an excellent course as well. Keep up the good work

davy1960hill. This was not something I was familiar with before I did this course,as I am still new to designing, but after consulting with Jimbo, I will make sure that it will not happen in future courses. I have already sorted this for the course I am currently working on. I might re-upload Woodtown Lodge course at some stage as a new version again with the changes applied and a few more tweaks. Apologies for the mistake and thanks for pointing it out.

This course has a great challenging layout and shows potential.
Unfortunately, playing it in expert level is not good, as most of the overhead maps do not show most of the fairways. If you could learn how to make the maps follow the dog-legs it would be a great step forward :)

You have done an outstanding job on this course! The extra time you stated that you spent on it certainly shows. Thanks so much for this one! 5 star!
