Requiring 5 libraries only, this par 71 looks very nice and... green with its English countryside panorama and wide tree-lined fairways. But, with tee shots often landing onto small plateaus and with elongated bunkers in front of ALL the wide greens, the front 9, at times, leave you with a feeling of “déjà vu”, as you will find out on quite a few holes, such as the straight par-5 1st, the left dogleg par-4 3rd, the right dogleg par-4 5th, or the dogleg par-4 8th holes. In between, reaching the hidden greens on the par-3 2nd and par-3 4th holes will require risky tee shots over trees lined up lengthwise in the middle of the fairway (on the 2nd), and thin tree across, two-thirds of the way, on the latter. Two other tricky holes await you, with the straight par-4 6th, with a tee shot landing onto a plateau (with two huge bunkers across, a few yards apart), and a slightly-downhill approach to the green, and the right dogleg par-5 7th (back the other way), with a blind second shot over the small plateau (and another bunker across the green, in front), before finishing with the nice par-3 9th hole, with a tee shot over a small mound and another plateau, downward to the green. The back 9 also has some small elevation changes but is more challenging and quite different, with well-placed water hazards and some tricky undulations near the cups, such as on the long par-5 11th hole, with a tee shot landing short of a serpentine river across the fairway (then flowing to the right), and a green, hard to read near the cup. Then, after the straight par-4 12th hole, similar to the 11th, with a tee shot over the winding river (but watch out for small bunkers, right behind !), you will have to hit very precise shots on the nice par-3 14th hole, with water in front of the green, and on the straight and picturesque par-4 16th (seen on the above picture) with its beautiful round island fairway, midway. Last, but not least, the last two holes are not only pretty, they are also quite risky, with the left dogleg par-4 17th, slightly-uphill, and with a small green, next to the river (on the right), and the beautiful right dogleg par-4 18th, with a serpentine river running all along on the right side of the fairway, and a tough shot over it in front of the green, quite scenic with its big and nice clubhouse behind. Pretty, easy (at times), risky (sometimes) : after playing this Hampstead Heath course, I still have ambivalent feelings, with a front 9 looking too repetitive to my taste, and a back 9, more fun and prettier with water to content with. But it plays smoothly and will make you think, which is what you want in a course, thanks to jbx1612 !
