Around a mostly-flat desert landscape, this par 73 plays very smoothly and is quite challenging with plenty of doglegs, up-and-down fairways, a few water hazards and some well-placed bunkers in front of uphill/downill greens. On the front 9, I like the short (about 325 yards) and sharp left dogleg par-4 2nd hole, downhill to the green, with trees hiding a big pond behind and in front of the green, and the scenic par-3 3rd, with deep rough filled with small bushes in front of the green. The left dogleg par-5 4th hole is nice too, with an uphill tee shot, a slanted and undulating fairway and an uphill approach to the elevated green, with a few bunkers in front... until you see one of the houses around the green... deeply buried in deep rough all the way up to its windows ! That's why I prefer, instead, the left dogleg par-4 5th hole, downhill all the way, with a tee shot over deep rough landing onto a rollercoaster fairway, with a small pond on the right, midway, and the par-3 6th, with a tee shot between trees near a small pond in front and to the right of the green. The last three holes are left doglegs, with my favorite being the scenic par-5 8th, with plenty of deep rough all around, some bunkers halfway on both sides of the steep up-and-down fairway, and with a blind second shot and a delicate approach to the green with more bunkers in front. The back 9 starts with the nice left dogleg par-5 10th hole, with a downhill tee shot, a slanted fairway and an uphill approach to the elevated green, with more deep rough across below, and is followed by the par-4 11th, with an undulating fairway and a small pond in front of the green, guarded by two bunkers. After the left dogleg par-4 12th hole, with a tee shot over deep rough and downhill all the way, you will reach the nice par-3 13th with, again, plenty of deep rough way below the steeply-elevated green, before heading for the short (about 485 yards) par-5 15th hole, downhill all the way to the green where, despite its slanted and undulating fairway, you should be able to putt for an eagle. Then, after the par-3 16th hole, with a blind and downhill tee shot to the green, the last two holes are doglegs : the par-5 17th is very pretty, bending to the right, with a tee shot over a tiny pond and around a small hill on the right (with plenty of rough and a few trees), before a long and downhill approach shot to the green, guarded by a couple of bunkers in front, whereas the par-4 18th hole bends to the left, with bunkers on both sides of the fairway halfway, and a blind second shot over trees to reach the hidden green. With its accidented terrain, Desert Plains Golf Club is anything but... plain ! With plenty of yellow deep rough everywhere (not really too deep in fact) and its rollercoaster fairways, onlcky173 designed a nice course which could be even nicer without its few displaying bugs (buried house and a grainy horizon)...
