At first glance, this Stafford Club, with its nice panoramic views of small rocky mountains and its tree-lined fairways looks relatively ”easy”, but you will soon find out after the dogleg par-4 1st hole, with a crescent-shaped small pond to the left of the small green, that it is indeed quite deceiving ! On the pretty dogleg left par-5 2nd hole, for example, you can forget about getting an eagle : with a big lake, midway in the inner corner, trying to reach the green on your second shot over the water is an impossible task as you will have to settle for a birdie opportunity, at best. If the next four holes offer a little reprieve (dogleg right par-4 3rd, par-3 4th, straight par-4 5th, with a tiered fairway, split by deep rough and a green, slightly downhill, and the 6th hole, downhill all the way), you will have to be very careful with your putting as the small greens are sometimes hard to read. Then, after the par-3 7th hole, and its green set on top of a small mound (with two bunkers right behind), you will face another tough par-5 hole, the dogleg right 8th, with a very risky second shot over a small lake if you want to reach its peninsula green, before walking over to the dogleg left par-4 9 th, with five small bunkers, midway on the outer corner to watch for, and a green, with bare land all around. The back 9 starts with the straight par-5 10th hole where, despite small rocks splitting the fairway, midway, you should be able to reach its elevated green with a long and blind second shot. Another noteworthy hole is the par-3 12th, pretty and a little tricky, with a tee shot over a lake and two small bunkers, real close to the front of the green, followed by the dogleg left par-4 13th, where your tee shot will have to avoid tall grass below in the inner corner of a narrow fairway. You will then face the nice par-3 15th hole, downhill to the green (and surrounded halfway behind by a big bunker), before moving on to the dogleg left par-4 16th, with a small rocky area, midway in the middle of the narrow fairway, and an elevated green, reachable after a blind shot. But the best is for last with the gorgeous dogleg left par-5 17th, the signature hole, very risky, with a tee shot hopefully landing onto a narrow elongated island fairway (in the middle of a wide lake), and another long and challenging second shot over the water to try to reach its small green, with three small bunkers around... Pretty to look at, despite its lack of bushes and flowers, this Stafford Club is an unusual parkland course, combining lengthy tee shots and very risky approaches toward its small greens, not to mention its tough par-5 holes, which is why should give it a try, as it shows another facet of Danut Golf’s talented design !
