A delightful course, with small mountains and a lake (visible far away on a few holes) as a panorama, sparsely-planted trees, and beautiful with a creek winding its way all around immaculate fairways and greens, surrounded with plenty of deep rough and a few very shallow “bunkers”. The right dogleg par-4 opening hole sets the tone for what you will face, with its slightly-uphill fairway hugging a serpentine creek, flowing past the green (on the right). But my favorite holes are the left dogleg par-4 3rd, with a tee shot landing short of the small lake (at the end of the creek) and over which you will have to hit your approach, the short dogleg par-5 4th, bending sharply to the right (and following the creek), with a blind and slightly-uphill tee shot landing near the bare side of the fairway (on the left), and the very scenic par-3 5th, with small lakes and their little creeks, left and right, ending on both sides of the green. Then, after the left dogleg par-4 6th hole, along an elongated island, filled with deep rough and a couple of trees (on the left), and the straight par-3 7th, with a tee shot over the creek crossing the fairway in front of the tee box (and flowing to the left), you will reach the right dogleg par-5 8th hole, with a blind and slightly-uphill tee shot and another blind (and long) shot over an elongated lake to reach the green, slightly downhill. The back 9 starts with the short and straight par-4 10th hole, with a tee shot over deep rough, bushes and a stream crossing the fairway diagonally (and flowing all along to the left), before continuing later on with the right dogleg par-5 13th, where you will need to hit a long and blind second shot over part of the elongated island (filled with deep rough and a few trees) to reach the green, with a little slope in the back. On the par-3 14th hole, you will need to hit a blind tee shot along an elongated lake (to the left), before walking back the other way on the par-3 15th, then moving on to the short and straight par-4 16th, with a tee shot flying twice over a serpentine creek and landing near some flat “bunker”. Then, after the tough left dogleg par-4 17th hole, with a blind and slightly-uphill tee shot landing between a winding creek (on the left) and an elongated lake (on the right), you will face one last challenge on the right dogleg par-5 18th, with a creek running all along the fairway (on the left) and a long and tough second shot over (or around) a couple of small trees to reach the green, far away. Needless to say, this par 72 is not for power hitters and, just like the course itself, you will have to find your way through the winding creeks, small lakes and paths and think twice before hitting your shots. If you do, then you will realize that this Doyle's retreat is a... "real" treat, thanks to Big Slick !
