This Lanakila (or Waikiki) course is quite pretty with a nice ocean to gaze at and small mountains around, and is quite challenging, despite its very sparse plantings, with some narrow and/or undulating fairways, slight elevation changes, doglegs, and plenty of water hazards, be it lakes, ponds and/or streams… On the front 9, I like the long right dogleg par-5 2nd hole, with its slightly-uphill tee shot and its very risky downhill approach to the green, hard to reach on your second shot, with a big pond in front, and the par-3 3rd which, not only looks nice, but is also very tough, with a tiny green, between a big elongated bunker on the left and a very big elongated lake on the right. After two dogleg par-4 holes, to the left (4th) and to the right (5th), both with slightly-uphill tee shots, you will reach the pretty left dogleg par-4 6th, downhill all the way and with a second shot over a small elongated lake in front of the green, before moving on to the uphill par-3 7th hole, quite bare all around... While the left dogleg par-5 8th hole is not overly difficult, it has an undulating and narrow fairway (especially in the middle) and you will need two shots to reach the green, guarded by a very big elongated bunker on the left (with another smaller one on the right), unlike the scenic dogleg par-4 9th, with its fairway hugging an elongated lake on the left over which you will have to hit your approach to reach the slightly-elevated green, bending sharply to the left ! The back 9 starts with the straight par-4 10th hole, with a very narrow fairway, and a blind downhill shot to the green, and continues with one of my favorite holes, the long par-5 11th, with a tee shot over an elongated and serpentine lake (going to the right, then to the left), landing near a big bunker on the left (with patches of grass in between), and another long second shot over the water (and its small bridge) splitting the fairway, to try to reach its elevated green ! Then, after the downhill par-3 12th hole, and its downhill green, partially hidden by trees in front, you will face the pretty downhill left dogleg par-4 13th, with a few ponds below in the right corner and an elevated green, before reaching another gorgeous and challenging hole, the left dogleg par-4 15th, with the fairway hugging an elongated lake on the left and a second shot over it to reach its winding peninsula green. You will finish your round with the scenic and signature (literally !) par-3 17th hole, with a tee shot over a small lake landing onto the green, with the name “Lanakila” written behind with flowers (on a small dirt slope), before hitting a slightly-uphill tee shot on the left dogleg par-5 18th over a meandering stream, going to the left, and a long approach over it again as it winds its way in front (and past) the green on the right. With this par 72, PdLegend designed a very challenging course which could be even prettier with a few more trees around, but it still deserves a "V" for... Lanakila in my book !

If you take a look at the STAFF NOTE in the arch comments of this course, you will see why it is named Waikiki. It actually INSTALLS as Waikiki, but the splash, logo and flag for the course have the Lanakila Island name. The course appears in your course list way down where the W courses are, not where the L courses are. Glad to see that the staff note I put on the course was not read.
