This course has a gorgeous (and very close !) rocky panorama (FjordMid), seen on a few other ones (such as on The Reaper, where I just played recently), which makes it quite appealing to the eye, especially when you look down at the spectacular fjord... Strangely, this par 70 starts with five straight holes with the nicest ones being the par-4 1st, with an elongated bunker on the right side of the fairway almost all along, and the par-3 5th hole, with a tee shot over a meandering river flowing all the way to the right past the green. The first dogleg holes, however, are worth the wait : the right dogleg par-4 6th is beautiful with a tee shot over a wide lake and another lake on the right side (not far from the green, slightly downhill), just like the par-5 7th hole, with a S-shaped fairway (and water on the right), a beautiful panoramic view of the fjord below (as you tee off over a big sand trap), and a long approach shot to the green, quite tough to reach with trees in the way on the right with more water behind on the right ! If the par-4 8th hole is nice too, with a tee shot over a big elongated creek running across the fairway, the left dogleg par-4 9th is even nicer, with nice (still) waterfalls to look at from the tee area and a tee shot over an enormous and wide sand trap, and with another small bunker to the left of the green to watch for. The back 9 has plenty of doglegs but, unfortunately, a few of them have grainy patches beyond the greens (13th, 14th, 16th and 18th holes), “spoiling” the nice visual impression of the course. After the left dogleg par-4 11th hole, with a creek running to the left of the green, the right dogleg par-4 13th, with water on the right side all the way past the green and more water on the left side behind the green, is quite nice (despite the above-mentioned grainy patches) and, if you look around closely, you might be able to see a few… squirrels running by ! Unlike the 13th hole, the par-3 14th hole is straight, but pretty too, with a big lake on the right and past the green, and is followed by the par-5 15th, with nice tall trees framing the tee area, an elongated sand trap further to the right and ending near the green, slightly to the left. Two other holes stand out : the par-3 16th hole, magnificent with its view of the fjord as you tee off, and the right dogleg par-4 18th, with an enormous and elongated sand trap on the left side of the fairway. Overall, thanks to ron717's design, Newman Creek is a very nice course, not too difficult but with some breathtaking views of the fjord, while offering a few challenging holes, especially on the back 9 and it plays very smoothly... despite those little displaying bugs !
