This par 72 is quite nice for a first design, especially considering that you have a feeling of getting “two courses for the price of one”, with a few challenging holes on the front 9 and even more scenic ones on the way back, with a lot of water hazards coming into play. As expected, this Beloit Hills Golf Club is quite... hilly, as you will find out with the opening up-and-down dogleg right par-4 hole. You will then face three consecutive par-5 holes, all different : the 2nd is a tough dogleg right, with a tee shot between trees, midway, landing onto an undulating fairway, winding its way, in the end, slightly to the... left toward the green (hard to reach on your second shot with trees in the inner corner), whereas the 3rd is a short and pretty dogleg, with a slanted fairway, framed by two small lakes (with fountains in the middle), midway. As for the 4th hole, it is pretty straight with a downhill tee shot and a long second shot upward to the green, surrounded by bunkers and nice flowers. After the slightly-downhill and straight par-3 5th hole, and the straight par-4 6th, with an uphill tee shot landing onto a slanted fairway (and with a downhill green), you will have to be very accurate with your tee shot on the uphill par-3 8th, with four bunkers surrounding the green, before heading for the straight par-4 9th, with a blind and downhill tee shot over a small mound (filled with a few shrubs), and a green, slightly to the left. As you head back home, the scenery changes, with water coming into play on a lot of holes, starting with the dogleg left par-4 10th, with trees in the inner corner and a lake to the left of the downhill green, and the “easier” par-4 11th, with a blind shot over water across in front of the tee box, and a downward approach to the green. After the par-3 12th hole, and its narrow green, surrounded by trees, halfway (along with a couple of bunkers), the course becomes even hillier and prettier. It starts with the par-5 13th hole, with a downhill tee shot landing short of a lake across the fairway, and a second shot over it to reach the steeply-elevated green, and continues with the scenic dogleg right par-4 14th, with a blind and downhill tee shot, again over the lake splitting the fairway, midway, and a nice approach toward the rolling green. Water is again a factor on the dogleg left par-4 15th hole, with a tee shot over a lake landing uphill on the other bank, not to mention a wide bunker to watch for in front (and to the left) of the green. Last, but not least, the par-3 17th hole is quite tricky, with a blind tee shot flying toward a steeply-elevated green, surrounded halfway by trees, just like the beautiful dogleg right par-4 18th, downhill all the way, but with a fairway, narrow in the middle with a big bunker (on the left) and a lake (below, on the right), and a nice approach toward the green (with a small colonial-style clubhouse, way behind, to look at). Using only 4 libraries, baddog 3095 showed a lot of promises with this Beloit Hills Golf Club and, even though the cart paths are quite eye-catching, they should not distract you from enjoying this course, quite challenging and pretty to look at, even on a... dog day afternoon !
