What a great fantasy course ! Not only it looks gorgeous with its rocky mountain panorama, small canyons, and very hilly landscape, but it is pretty tough too. I managed to finish at even par (72), scoring only five birdies, three of them on the first three holes, which are among the toughest : go figure it out ! It started with the vertiginous par-3 1st hole, with the green on the other side of a big ravine with a nice bridge on the right side, and continued with the par-4 2nd, with a blind tee shot over the small canyon to reach the downhill tiered fairway and the green, with mounds nearby. After the short downhill par-3 3rd hole, quite nice, the right dogleg par-5 4th hole can be tricky, with a downhill tee shot and a little creek linking two lakes and running across the fairway, making your club selection crucial if you don't want to end up in the water. Another risk/reward hole is the short par-4 5th hole (around 300 yards), with a lake slightly to the right and where you can reach the green, guarded by big bunkers. The par-3 6th hole, on another hand, requires a blind tee shot between a thin tree-lined fairway to reach the green, with bunkers and deep rough around. Another gorgeous and risk/reward hole is the right dogleg par-5 9th, with big rocks below in front of the tee box, a lake on the left side (and flowing across the fairway) and another lake to the left of the green. Coming back is not a piece of cake either, starting with par-4 10th hole, slightly to the left, with an uphill tee shot over a small lake on the left, an undulated fairway and an elevated green with another small lake below. If you are in a gambling mood, you might want to try to reach the green of the short par-4 11th hole, but beware of the few bunkers in front of it ! The right dogleg par-5 12th hole, slightly downhill, is quite picturesque, with a small lake in front of the tee box, a barn and an old farm windmill on the left side below the fairway and a few mounds and deep rough near the green. The par-3 13th hole is pretty too, with a big rock down below in a small valley and the downhill green on the other bank, and so is the right dogleg par-4 14th hole, with a small lake in front, a rocky wasteland on the right side, thin trees on the left and an uphill green. The downhill par-4 15th hole is tough with a big tee shot over the canyon and the lake, but it is also gorgeous with its wide open panoramic view and its green on the other bank. And if you think you have seen it all, take a look at the par-3 16th hole : with a vertiginous downhill tee shot over the canyon and its lake and a small green on the other bank, it is simply superb ! Then, after the nice par-4 17th hole, with the small canyon on the left side of the fairway, slim trees on the right and big rocks below the green, you will complete your round with the right dogleg par-5 18th hole where, after a downhill tee shot (with a big sand trap on the right side of the fairway), you will have to decide again if you lay off or try to hit your second shot above the meandering lake crossing the fairway... With this Durango course, eppiedad did a fantastic job with the elevation, landscape and plantings. If, indeed, it is really a fantasy course, seeing a small well (to the right of the tee box of the 7th hole), barns, windmills, make it a pure delight to watch and play while giving it an old western look. Now, up to you to find out if Durango refers to the small town in Colorado or to the hero of the Belgian comics...
