With one of my favorite panoramas (Laurel Ridge) to admire, this par 72 plays very smoothly and is not overly difficult despite a few sharp doglegs and a couple of water hazards. The first two par-4 holes are rather easy, with nice tree-lined fairways : the 1st hole is straight and looks pretty near the tee box with its small retaining wall and white flowers on the right side, whereas the 2nd has a green, slightly to the left, but you will have to be careful on both holes to avoid the small ponds behind (on the 1st) or to the right (on the 2nd) of the greens. The right dogleg par-5 3rd hole has an undulated fairway and a very long approach shot to the green, with a couple of hollow bunkers in front of the green and three nice small houses behind… not far from power lines (!), and is followed by the nice and “easy” par-3 4th, with two small ponds to the right and behind the green. Then, after the downhill right dogleg par-4 5th hole, with a big bunker in the right corner and a meandering path all along on the right side, you will reach the scenic downhill par-3 7th, with a couple of ponds spread across in front of the green, before getting a shot at an eagle and/or birdie opportunity on the sharp and short (less than 500 yards) left dogleg par-5 8th hole, with a nice tree-lined fairway and a few bunkers near the green. On the back 9, I like the sharp dogleg par-4 10th hole, with a wide lake on the left side, with an uphill approach shot to the green, guarded by 3 small bunkers, the left dogleg par-4 11th, with four bunkers in the left corner and 3 more in front of the green, and the par-3 12th hole, with a tee shot over a small pond and a nice little house behind the green. Other holes worth mentioning are the sharp right dogleg par-5 13th, with nice small retaining walls made of stones, framing the tee box, and the easy and nice right dogleg par-4 14th hole, with a tee shot over tall trees and a nice panoramic view as you reach the green. But the signature hole on this course is the picturesque par-3 17th hole, with its island green and three houses around the lake. With its wide-open look, at times, Cougar Ridge is not the most difficult course you will ever play but it has some nice challenging holes and looks pretty... even though ron717 could have left those power lines out !
