With small undulating hills and nice trees, this par 72 looks good and plays well but is not too challenging, despite some elevation changes, water hazards and a few tricky greens, hard to read. On the front 9, I like the short right dogleg par-4 2nd hole, uphill all the way and with a big pond not too far from the green (on the right), the straight par-3 3rd, with a big pond on the right side of the green, and the right dogleg par-5 4th, with a slanted fairway and trees lined up on the right side hiding the green. The right dogleg par-4 7th hole, with a downhill tee shot landing near a small lake surrounding an elongated island (with a few small houses in the middle), and the right par-4 8th, back the other way, are also worth mentioning, offering some nice wide open views. There is more water on the back 9 with the interesting left dogleg par-4 12th hole, with a downhill tee shot over trees (on the left) landing near a river running all along on the right side of the fairway, the pretty par-3 13th, my favorite hole, with a small river running diagonally in front of the green (partially hidden by trees on the left), and the left dogleg par-5 14th, with a long second shot over a serpentine river toward a slightly-elevated green. On the short right dogleg par-5 17th hole, uphill all the way, you should be able to get an eagle opportunity with a second shot toward its elevated green (with a wide lake behind), before finishing with the right dogleg par-4 18th, downhill all the way and along a river (on the left). For a first course, Alan Portway did a very good job designing this Royal Oak Country Club but... 16 years later, TW08 has evolved so much that there are plenty of other more exciting ones, both visually and playing-wise...

I do play on Normal most of the time but can play on dry, but a lot ocourses made for TW roll back to your feet from a slope even on normal! but I do take the point of the slopes, I like gentle undulating greens and not like crazy golf. A challenge is one thing, but sheer luck and chance to get it in the hole is another!

Thanks to those who have taken the time to comment. As I have indicated this was my first course and I gathered that some of the really good players seem to hit very low scores and therefore I sought to make the putting a challenge. from your comments about putting on very dry greens I am not sure what to do for my next course. Perhaps testing with some twist and turns but not as much slope. Further comment appreciated.

Alan, I also remember you from Linkscorner.org. Remember Cuan Staugh? Would love to see you do a Tiger Woods rendition of that one. It was a great Links 2003 course. For a first effort with the TW course architect, you did an excellent job with Royal Oak CC, looks and plays beautiful. Thanks, hope to see more.

Thought I recognized the name from Links Alan. This is a very nice design for your first TW attempt. Little bit different than working with the APCD isnt it. LOL. The textures and the use of various tree types gives this course a very appealing look. Some of the greens might be a little nasty when played under very dry conditions. The only minor negative is that the water doesnt quite have the transparancy it should have. Other than that, it is a commendable effort.
