So many courses, so little time! I like links-style courses, and the thing I like most about this course by Hyno is that the bounces in the fairway, the breaks on the green, are very fair - too close to a bunker you're in it! Too far away from the pin and you'll be putting up and down and left and right... But the bunkers (love pot bunkers...) don't suck you in, and the greens run true to speed and break.

With the nice Cypress ocean panorama to look at, this par 70 is quite challenging with plenty of doglegs and… sand all over, not to mention a few… water hazards besides the ocean ! The left dogleg par-4 1st hole will test you right away, with sand covering half of the fairway length-wise (!) with the ocean as a backdrop, and is followed by the pretty and straight par-3 2nd, with tall trees framing the tee box (and flowers around), and a small mound with high rough behind the green, and the ocean further behind. The left dogleg par-4 3rd hole has a nice downhill view from the tee and… sand on the left side all along the undulated fairway (next to the ocean) with plenty of small bunkers (especially on the right side), just like the slightly-downhill left dogleg par-4 4th, along the beach on the left, with the green to the left of a red lighthouse. The scenery then moves inland with the dogleg par-4 5th hole, with plenty of small bunkers on both sides of the fairway, before heading to the par-3 6th, with more sand near the green, and the ocean behind. Then, after the left dogleg par-5 7th hole and its nice view, with sand all along on the left side and in front of the green (and the ocean on the right), the par-3 8th moves back inland again with a tee shot over an elongated lake and a green, surrounded by four small bunkers, just like the slightly down, then up, right dogleg par-4 9th hole, with a nice clubhouse behind the green. Coming back, I like the downhill right dogleg par-4 10th hole, with large bunkers on both sides of the fairway and near the green, and the scenic par-3 11th, with its nice overview as you reach the green. But one of my favorite holes is the left dogleg par-5 12th, with a blind uphill tee shot (hopefully) landing on a downhill slope in the corner, a few trees in a hollow wasteland further below and bunkers across the fairway and near the elevated green ! Similarly, the right dogleg par-4 13th hole is quite nice too, with trees again in a hollow wasteland across the fairway midway through, and a nice panoramic view of the small mountains with the ocean on the right and a slightly-elevated green. The left dogleg par-4 14th hole offers another challenge, with a big lake on the right side in the corner and big bunkers on the left, and is followed by the right dogleg par-4 15th, with a tee shot over a big lake and another small one on the right side of the green. But if the 15th hole is nice, the dogleg par-5 16th,, one of my favorites, is more picturesque and tougher, with a tee shot over a big lake and an island green with two bunkers around, awaiting your long (and gambling !) approach shot with “open arms”… Then, after the long (more than 250 yards) par-3 17th hole, with more sand between the tee and the slightly-elevated green, the par-5 18th hole will let you “admire” one of the widest fairways ever before hitting your approach shot toward the green with the clubhouse nearby. With Carolina Starling, Hyno designed a course that will test your skills throughout with all those huge bunkers : so, don't forget your "bucket and spade", as it may come in handy...

Excellent design and a very entertaining course. Definitely has a hybrid links/south feel to it and visually it's a beauty. The layout is an intriguing one with plenty of variety and some really nice holes - a couple of the par 3's were outstanding - and overall it's a clever and challenging track. Really enjoyed it, great stuff, cheers!

Let me start by saying that although the 08 version of the Starling course has a totally different look and feel to it compared to the first version which you introduced in 05, I like both versions very much. I do not care for the ocean look in the latest version however. The glassy appearance of the water in the foreground blending with the regular ocean like water in the background although somewhat strange looking is not the real issue. It is when the ocean opens up into what almost appears as a canyon during several ball flight views is really somewhat of a distraction. These ocean abnormalities really occur quite frequently in a lot if not almost all custom ocean courses. It really lessens the quality of what is aside from that a very excellent design. It would be great if someone could figure out how to make an ocean pano that simply just looks like ocean water without any weird textures or drop offs. I dont even care if the waves splash against the shore as long as it has uniformity to it. I can think of at least five or six custom ocean courses in the past that were great designs but where the ocean looked mediocre at best. I also experienced five crashes to desktop on the front nine so I am assuming that the standard Hyno Settings must be employed for a trouble free round. Again, the course is an excellent design, it is just the ocean that is giving me heartburn.
