A beautiful course that ran like a charm (under TW07) with a nice hilly panorama and superb plantings, making this course look real.
This par 72 has plenty of doglegs and a lot of uphill approach shots to the greens, not to mention water hazards (ponds, rivers, creeks) and a few well-placed bunkers and trees to keep you in check.
After a nice and straight opening par-4 hole, with a downhill tee shot next to the river on the right, and an elevated green, I like the downhill par-3 2nd, with a half-moon-shaped pond on the left and behind the green and the cute little log cabins around.
If the downhill par-5 3rd hole, with the river on the right, and an elevated green with a small lake behind, is not overly difficult and quite short (less than 480 yards), I prefer the very picturesque downhill par-3 4th, with water around both sides of the green, set on a plateau, with the river below on the left !
The next few holes are doglegs : the par-4 5th follows the river on the right, with an uphill tee shot and a downhill approach shot to the green, the par-4 6th hole is similar, but a little bit flatter, whereas the down-and-up par-4 7th has an elevated green with a lake behind.
One of my favorite holes is the par-4 8th, with its rollercoaster fairway, uphill then downhill, with a creek on the left side flowing partially across the fairway in the middle of the downhill slope (with bushes around), and a blind tee shot down toward the green !
As for the right dogleg par-4 9th hole, more wide-open on the left side (with less trees), you will need another uphill approach shot to reach the green.
On the back 9, I also like the downhill par-5 10th hole, with trees and bushes lined up in the middle of the fairway (with a big bunker on the right), and a meandering creek going around it in front of the green, a little bit downhill.
The par-3 12th hole, with an elevated green in front of a small pond, is not too tricky, just like the left dogleg par-4 13th, quite nice with a big elongated pond on the left and a blind shot to the steep downhill green.
The left dogleg par-5 14th hole, with a river on the right side and the green, partially hidden by trees on the right, is also pretty, whereas the par-3 15th hole, with a tee shot over a small lake around, has one of the widest green you will ever see !
After the right dogleg par-4 16th hole, with a downhill tee shot and a blind uphill approach shot to the green, and the long and straight par-5 17th, with a rollercoaster fairway and a slightly-elevated green, you will finish your round with the straight par-4 18th hole, with a river on the right and a small pond on the left, before heading for the nice clubhouse (with a few carts parked in front), behind the elevated green.
Overall, Drakensberg Highlands Resort is a very well-designed golf course and could easily be defined as real with its natural and nice plantings and its river, running by. So, if you want to have a very enjoyable time, why not start over there ? I did and I am glad, thanks to Wizard's designing talent !

A liitle late to the table. Played the course twice thru and it did not crash once. This course is outstanding, one of the best without a doubt. Gave it the 5 stars it deserves IMHO.

The focus of earlier comments revolved around crashes to the desktop. Here we are, nearly 5 years after the last comment & I'm here to tell ya it's still happening! That might explain the low rating, which is a shame as the course itself certainly deserves better than 3.5 in how it looks & plays. Very effective placement (& height) of trees within range of tee shots on bending fairways throughout the course. Combine that with undulating fairways & greens, plus a coupla almost hidden water hazards, then you're facing quite a challenge. Even with the crashes, it was worth the slight niggle to play on & enjoy the rest of the course. Lovely design, Wizards...

Good course Wizards..Liked the river that runs alongside holes five and six. The birdsong was good but maybe it could have been a bit less ubiquitous. Hole eight is my bugbear..there seems to be a very small landing area to have a clear path to the flag. No crashes for me but I read your comments on possible causes of crashes..I hope it is not the point count as I love to see plenty of trees, bushes, tall grass, etc.

Hi all, thankx for the feedback and comments. Sorry for the crashes but i cannot pinpoint what causes this as it is completly random and does not occur with every one.

Unless everyone who experiences a crash submits a full deion of their system, and game settings it will remain very difficult to isolate the problem.

Hyno Designs went into quite a bit of detail explaining the woes of CA2006 and the possible reasons for crashes after users reported crashes on his Carnoustie 2008.

The courses i have done all come from 2003 and all that was done was re-texturing and
re-planting from 2008 libraries except for some structures from 2006 libraries.
The courses ran perfectly in 2003.

My conclusion brings me to three suspects.
1. Something wrong with the course plots having been done in CA2003 and recompiled in CA2006. 2. Too much planting, 3. 2006 structures, but then again it maybe none of these?

My next course will be done from the ground up in CA2006.

I think my signature should read as CA2006 can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle

Interesting comments regarding the crashes. When I first played this course, it played fine all the way through. The second time I played it I was on the 9th Tee and had to answer a phone call so I just left my player standing on the tee. After about a 5 minutes absence I returned to the computer and found that it had crashed to desktop. Well into the back nine I was taken away from the game again and after returning to the computer after several minutes found that it had crashed to desktop again. It seems that during several minutes of inactivity while on the course, is when these crashes occur for me. As long as I am continuously playing the course, there are no problems. I remember this happening with a couple of other courses in the past, just not sure what causes this.

Nice course, lots of uphill approach shots. Course made my game crash on the 17th hole, first time I ever had a game crash.

Hi jurgie, the files are included but they have all been packed in the tcx using the new course installer. You will have to use this installer to be able to extract and install all the files. Previously logos, flags etc where packed separately.

Oops, I just noted your comments about using the new installer. I used the regular CU. Maybe thats why the logo and flag did not appear. If so, my appologies.

This is a very very nice course design. Runs very smooth at highest settings and low shader level. Superb texture and elevation work. Couple of things that are not relevant to the actual design. Would have liked to have seen a course flag and proper logo for 08. I think this course deserves that. Super job otherwise.
