If you want to spend a nice day in the... desert and not worry too much about hitting great shots all the time, this par 73 is a nice place to start !
With its wide fairways and greens, you will have plenty of time to admire the spectacular mountainous panorama, and the beautiful vegetation all around, before “worrying” about hitting a few blind shots, steeply uphill or downhill, and around a wide lake.
And don’t forget to bring your camera to “immortalize” the superb downhill par-5 1st hole, with its colorful flowers and bushes on the right side of the tee box, and a big lake, midway on the left, and the gorgeous right dogleg par-4 4th, with a blind tee shot, landing deep down the fairway.
The left dogleg par-4 6th is another nice hole, with a tee shot over plenty of sand, a small lake midway on the left, and a few wide greenside bunkers to worry about (with a few rocks around), not to mention the straight par-5 9th, with sand splitting the fairway, halfway, and a long and blind second shot downward to the green.
On the back 9, I like the right dogleg par-5 12th hole, with a second shot to the green flying over a big elongated lake, and the pretty and straight par-4 13th, with tall cacti on both sides of the tee box and a steeply-downhill and blind shot, with a nice panoramic view of the valley.
Then, after the straight par-4 14th hole and its bowl-shaped and undulating fairway, you will move on to the gorgeous par-3 16th, with a blind and steeply-downhill tee shot landing onto the green, surrounded by beautiful vegetation, with an old cart (not the golf one !) and a big barrel !
You will finish with two left dogleg holes, the nice par-4 17th, with beautiful vegetation around the left corner and an elevated green (with a wide lake behind and on the right), and the par-5 18th with, again, a wide lake behind the green.
If Desert Hills is not a difficult course, it is gorgeous and, once in a while, it is nice to have a stress-free round of golf. And with small barrels as tee markers, high camera towers and a few other "goodies", you will definitely enjoy this par 73 which, by the way, does not look at all like the above picture !

The following is a PM that I sent to Eaglphan (Joe) several weeks ago with some feedback on his Desert Hills course. In light of recent postings here, I asked Joe if it was OK to post my comments as an example of my view of constructive comments. Joe said sure, and I promise to try out his latest offering Eagleview which I am sure will show greatly improved design skills. :)

Joe:

I gave Desert Hills a run-thru ...

General observations: framerates generally between 29-33 for me, which is a bit lower than I like to see. Not laggy, but I can tell that my video card is working harder than it should. Usually 40 fps and up is very good for me. This is caused by a variety of factors: you are using 7 stock libraries Ɣ from 08 and 3 from 06), which is a lot. I try to use 2 or maybe 3 at the most. You have a TON of plantings on the course with very dense areas even in the distance ... I would guess close to 10,000 objects, which is very high. You also have a fair amount of structures on the course as well, towers, vineyard things, etc. All of these things combined will result in a drop in fps and also increased load times between holes. I counted 9-10 seconds between holes, which isnt terribly long, but still makes you feel like you are waiting.

As far as textures, nice job trying to replicate the look/feel of a desert. One quibble: I wasnt too crazy about the fringe texture because it was a much brighter green than the fairway/green.

After a while, I noticed that a lot of your holes have blind tee shots. This could be because of the single, long tee box that you use, but you might want to stagger your tee box areas and raise the pro tee. Remember, expert players do not have the ability to hit the E key to see the ball flight path. Blind shots can get a little old after several holes. Also, you need to keep an eye on your overhead views to make sure none of the fairway is cut off this is something else that expert players need to see. Holes 10 and 18 come to mind with cut-off overhead views.

The course was a bit schizophrenic ... very flat in some places, and some great elevation work in other places. I would try to continue the elevation work throughout the course to create some nice flow.

Very nice plantings on the 1st hole and in several other places. Very original look. A bit demanding on the system, so it should be using sparingly though. I thought several of your greens were created by using the flatten to minimum tool. I would not recommend using that tool on greens because you then have a very, very flat green. I only use the flatten to minimum tool on water and when I want to do a pot bunker. You should try working on green undulations ... take a look at Smiling Goats video on that. Raise one side of the green to create a little slope and then add some subtle undulations. You can also use the 2 shape method to try to create tiers or ridges.

Favorite holes: 3 and 6 had very impressive elevation work that felt natural and flowing. Also 13 was interesting because it was the only hole with significant fairway undulations.

You certainly have talent and hopefully there are some ideas here that you can put to use.

Good luck.
Roger

When you are on course download page: on right side you will see all required libraries.
click on library name Dories vinyard ( click on text ), and you will be able to download the library.
When downloaded install library in game with CLsetup or Courseutilities.

( another option is: go to library section ...and type in search box: dorie )
