Unlike the Black Mountain Golf Club course, a real one (released today and designed by the CGX team) and voted one of the best in Thailand (located in Hua Hin), this delightful course is a fantasy one, but it could very well be a real one too with its beautiful landscape, set in North Carolina. Don’t be fooled by its look, this par 72 is quite challenging with plenty of water hazards, nice elevation, quite a few strategically-placed trees and bunkers and, as BJMac pointed out, a tough finishing stretch. The first two holes are around a wide lake, starting with the par-5 1st, with a straight tee shot landing in front of the lake and a fairway hugging it sharply on the right all the way to the green, whereas the par-3 2nd is straight with water, again on the right. The course then moves inland with the straight par-4 3rd hole, with an undulating and slightly-uphill fairway, and the nice and sharp left dogleg par-5 4th, with an uphill tee shot, another undulating fairway and a blind approach downward to the green, with two bunkers across in front. The right dogleg par-4 5th hole comes back the other way and is downhill all the way to the green and is followed by the straight and pretty par-4 6th, slightly uphill all the way with a tee shot over a small pond, with another pond across the fairway midway and a green, surrounded by four big bunkers ! Then, after the par-4 7th hole, downhill all the way with a heavily-slanted fairway and a green, slightly to the left, you will have an eagle opportunity on the short (about 315 yards) and straight par-4 8th, where you can reach the downhill green with a tee shot over trees and three elongated bunkers (in the corner halfway), before moving on to one of my favorite holes, the very scenic par-3 9th, downhill to the green, with a tee shot over a serpentine creek (ending into the wide lake behind) and a breathtaking panoramic view beyond... The back 9 starts with the very pretty left dogleg par-4 10th hole, with two fairways visible, the first one hugging the lake, below on the left, and the latter, parallel and above, partially hidden by tall and thin trees (with a big elongated bunker in the left corner) and where your uphill tee shot should land before hitting your blind approach to the downhill green. You will come back downhill the other way on the right dogleg par-4 11th hole (above the two previous fairways on the right), with a blind second shot to the green, next to the clubhouse (and a big empty parking lot on the left), before heading for the nice and tough par-3 12th, with a tee shot over an elongated lake all the way to the green. The par-5 13th hole is another beauty, bending sharply to the left, with an uphill tee shot and a very long and blind downhill shot to the green over some trees, a big pond (further back), and some deep rough and a couple of bunkers in front of the green, unlike the short (about 335 yards) left dogleg par-4 14th, where you can cut the corner with your blind and downhill tee shot over tall and thin trees. You will then face a steeply-elevated green on the pretty par-3 15th hole, with a wide bunker way below on the left, before moving on to the risky and short (about 320 yards) downhill par-4 16th, with a wide lake on the left, small trees on a hilltop (on the right) and a green (facing the tee box), hard to reach with a few trees and a couple of bunkers in front. On the par-4 17th hole, you will have to hit a tee shot over a wide lake and avoid a big bunker on the left (near the edge) and an elongated bunker on the right (in front of another wide lake), before aiming for the green, slightly to the left. As for the long (almost 600 yards) par-5 18th hole (similar to the 1st), you will need to hit a straight tee shot landing in front of a wide lake, before deciding whether you want to try to reach the green with a long and risky second shot over the water or play it safe by aiming for the fairway, on the left, hugging the wide lake on the right... Well-designed as usual by barrylb37, this Black Mountain CC is a delightful course to watch, play and... keep !
