With its beautiful landscape, lush vegetation, nice ocean and a pretty panoramic view of a suburban area, this par 72 is not overly difficult, with mostly wide-open fairways, provided that you can read the putts on some of its sloping greens, often surrounded by water hazards and/or wide bunkers, but where are the... yachts ?
The front 9 is simply spectacular with plenty of great-looking holes, starting with the gorgeous and straight par-4 1st, facing the ocean, with a wide-open fairway, lined up with palm trees and plenty of vegetation, and slightly-downhill all the way to the green, and the scenic and straight par-4 2nd, similar to the 1st, but with a view of the city skyline (on the right) as you approach the downhill green.
Two superb holes follow with the par-3 3rd, with a tee shot over a wide lake landing onto a peninsula green, and with a few... herons standing nearby, and the dogleg left par-5 4th, with a tee shot flying above two parallel lakes, separated by grass and deep rough, and a slightly-downhill green, reachable with a long second shot, offering a nice view of the suburban area behind and surrounded with a few bunkers.
Then, after the straight par-4 5th hole, with a downhill tee shot and uphill approach to the green, you will face the nice wide-open dogleg left par-4 6th, downhill all the way, with an undulating fairway and water winding its way across and in front of the green, before moving on to the pretty par-3 7th, with a lake set to the left and behind the green (with herons again !), and the postcard par-5 8th, facing high-rise buildings, with a downhill tee shot flying twice over a serpentine creek and a long second shot to reach the elevated green, surrounded by four big bunkers, set slightly to the right.
You will finish with the wide-open and quite bare par-4 9th hole, downhill all the way and bending slightly to the left, before starting your way back with the picturesque dogleg left par-4 10th, with a tee shot over (or around) palm trees and vegetation (in the inner corner), and a slightly-elevated green.
As you stand on the par-5 11th hole, you can forget about getting an eagle, as it is quite long (around 600 yards) and bending slightly to the left (and with an elongated lake to the left of the green to watch for), but you might be able to birdie the pretty but challenging par-3 12th, with a tee shot over a big lake and a flag, set right on its edge, before facing two similar dogleg right par-4 holes (13th, 14th) with downhill greens.
However, unlike on the 11th hole, you might be able to get an eagle on the nice dogleg right par-5 15th, downhill all the way, with a big bunker (in the inner corner) and a long second shot toward the green, with a big lake to watch for (on the right), and follow with a birdie opportunity on the pretty, but not too difficult par-3 16th, with a tee shot over another big lake and a nice panoramic view of the clubhouse and the suburbs in the background, before finishing with two “easier” par-4 holes (17th, 18th), with two slightly-elevated greens.
For his “first” course, Rejects (alias “rlslay”) designed another beauty, and this Amaila Yacht & Spa CC 2013 layout (Amalia on the scorecard !) is very enjoyable and definitely not a... reject, even though I kept looking for the spa... to soothe my aches and pains !
