What more can I say that I haven’t said already ? Once again, another pretty fantasy course from rlslay, looking quite real, with a nice suburban panorama and the ocean far away, with mostly wide open fairways, but with plenty of water hazards (lakes and creeks), and some well-placed bunkers, especially around the greens. Even though most of the water holes are on the back 9, you will need to hit a tee shot over a lake across the fairway on the dogleg right par-4 1st, while admiring the suburbs in front, before seeing the ocean far away on the par-3 3rd, downhill and with 7 small bunkers surrounding the green in a horseshoe shape. Then, after two downhill holes (par-4 4th, with a green, slightly to the left, and dogleg right par-4 5th, with a slightly-elevated green, surrounded by 7 more bunkers !), water is again part of the scenery on the dogleg left par-4 6th, slightly downhill all the way and with a big lake, midway (on the right) to watch for. With no water in sight, the dogleg right par-5 7th hole, bending sharply to the right, will offer you a chance for a birdie – more likely than an eagle, as its elevated green is hard to reach on your second shot, just like the par-3 8th, with a tee shot over deep rough and across a cart path and with three elongated bunkers surrounding the green, before walking over to the scenic dogleg left par-4 9th hole, with a downhill tee shot and an approach over a big lake toward its peninsula green. The back 9 is nicer and tougher, starting with the beautiful par-4 10th hole, with a tee shot flying over a serpentine creek, crossing the fairway, three times, and landing next to a big pond (midway, on a left) and a risky approach to the green, with that creek winding its way to the right. The next three holes are doglegs, bending to the right : the par-5 11th has a bumpy fairway set along trees and a tortuous creek (on the right), and you will need a long second shot to reach its green, with the creek ending in front of it, and the par-4 12th, downhill all the way requires a tee shot over part of a big lake, midway (on the right) – with a tiny island in the middle), and a careful approach to the green, with 5 big bunkers around, unlike the “easier” downhill par-4 13th. The par-3 14th hole is not only pretty, it is also challenging with a tee shot over a lake landing onto a small peninsula green, surrounded by 3 bunkers, and is followed by the long (about 600 yards) par-5 15th, with a tee shot landing near a big lake (on the right) and a green, slightly to the right, again very hard to reach on your second shot. Finally, after two “easier” holes (par-3 16th, and dogleg right par-5 17th, with a potential eagle), you will have to hit two precise shots on the straight par-4 18th hole, with a tee shot landing past a small lake (midway, on the left) and an approach over another creek flowing into a big lake, in front of the green. With its slight elevation changes, nice plantings, water coming into play on quite a few holes and its greens, surrounded by lots of bunkers, this Bay City GC par 72 course is delightful to play, even though it does not have the charm of... Baywatch !
