With rocky slopes and mountains all around, this par 71 is pretty to look at but also quite challenging, especially on the front 9, with plenty of elevation changes and a few blind and steeply-downhill shots. As you get ready to tee off on the dogleg right par-5 1st hole, you better bring your A game, as the undulating fairway hugs a small canyon, partially hidden by trees (on the right), unlike the green, reachable with a very long second shot, but set right above the deep canyon (on the right). The short (around 120 yards) and beautiful par-3 2nd hole will have your knees shaking again, when you try to hit a blind shot over rocks, bushes and trees landing way down onto a sloping green, before heading for the left dogleg par-5 3rd, along a rocky wall (on the left), where you will need to hit a downhill tee shot and a very long and blind second shot to try to get close to the green. After getting a “break” on the straight par-4 4th hole, and its slightly-elevated green, you will need to hit a precise shot on the par-3 5th, to avoid a deep bunker, surrounding its elevated green, halfway, before admiring the postcard and downhill panoramic view of the hills and the mountains on the very long (around 635 yards) dogleg right par-5 6th, with bunkers, midway, making the fairway quite narrow, and an elevated green, impossible to reach on your second shot. Then, after the right dogleg par-4 7th hole, with a downhill tee shot and uphill approach, you will face another par-3 hole, the 8th, with a blind tee shot flying steeply down past a rocky area, before enjoying the wide open dogleg left par-4 9th, downhill all the way (and along rows of bushes and small trees, on the right) and with a blind approach to the green. The back 9 starts with the right dogleg par-4 10th hole, quite tricky with wide and elongated areas (some deep with a few trees planted in) on both sides of the fairway, and in front of the green, before facing later on the right dogleg par-5 12th, with a downhill tee shot landing near bunkers on both sides of the narrow fairway, midway, a blind second shot and a short approach to reach the downhill green. Thankfully, the finishing holes are not as punishing, except for the scenic par-3 14th, with a blind tee shot flying steeply down over a rocky slope and a small pond in front of the green, and the dogleg par-5 15th, bending sharply to the left, with a tee shot over trees and a very long second shot over heavy rough and small hills to try to reach the elevated green. With its nice panorama and abundant vegetation, this Tahquamenon Country Club will definitely test your skills and stamina with plenty of rollercoaster holes, some vertiginous, and if you can manage to birdie some of the par-5 holes, along with the tough par-3s, you might break par on this well-designed course from rlslay.
