Once in a while, rlslay gives his team of gardeners a well-deserved break, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see any gorgeous tropical vegetation and lots of flowers and shrubs on this par 72. Instead, you will be surprised by this Sierra Open, right off the bat, seeing the straight par-5 1st hole, whose undulating fairway is framed all along by sand (on the left) and a big lake (on the right). The next three holes are challenging par-4 doglegs with strategically-placed bunkers in the middle of the fairways, with the toughest one being the 3rd hole, with three bunkers to avoid, midway in the left corner, before hitting an uphill and blind approach to the green, and are followed by the dogleg right par-5 5th, quite tricky with a couple of more bunkers, midway, making the fairway quite narrow, and two deep elongated bunkers guarding the green. A scary sight awaits you as you stand on the tee box of the beautiful par-3 6th hole, with its elevated green set at the tip of the lake, before moving on to the straight par-4 7th, whose fairway is quite narrow, with bunkers around, midway again. Then, after the short par-4 8th hole, with a tee shot over a wide sandy area and an approach to the green, set to the right of a small lake, you will get a break with the “easy” par-3 9th. The back 9 starts with another dogleg right par-4 hole, with a small bunker, hard to avoid in the middle of the fairway, and continues with the scenic dogleg right par-4 11th, with a tee shot over water landing onto a peninsula fairway and a green, set above the edge of the lake. Water comes back into play again on the pretty par-3 13th hole, with a tee shot over a wide lake offering a nice panoramic view of sandy areas on the way to the green, before moving on to the dogleg left par-5 14th and the dogleg right par-4 15th, with their undulating fairways and blind approaches to the greens. Another challenging hole is in store for you with the par-5 16th, quite tricky with bunkers in the middle of the slanted fairway, forcing you to think twice before hitting your tee shot and aiming your blind approach to the green for a potential eagle. You will complete your round with two very scenic holes, the par-3 17th, slightly downhill (with another great panoramic view), and the dogleg left par-4 18th, uphill all the way, and with its green, at the tip of the cliff, before heading for a well-deserved rest (now, it’s your time !) at the nice clubhouse, set on the left side. With this Sierra Open, rlslay embarked on a rather new designing territory which turned out to be quite enjoyable and challenging, but make sure to bring your bucket and spade... as you might need them on quite a few holes !
