Another spectacular course from rlslay, with nice mountains and high-rise buildings as a panorama, beautiful plantings (and colorful, as usual), and not as easy as it looks sometimes, despite its flat greens, with some well-placed bunkers and water hazards nearby. After the dogleg right par-4 1st hole, and the straight and “easy” par-4 2nd, offering a pretty panoramic view, I like the short dogleg right par-5 3rd where, after landing your tee shot between two big bunkers, midway in the corner, you should have a chance for an eagle opportunity before facing the nice par-3 4th, and the dogleg left par-4 5th, and its elevated green. My two favorite holes on the front 9 are, in fact, the dogleg left par-4 6th, with a big bunker, midway in the inner corner, and a wide sandy area, filled with a little bit of grass on the right (next to a big lake), leaving you with a very long second shot to reach the green, and the dogleg right par-4 7th, pretty with its tee shot landing onto an elevated and slanted fairway (hugging the lake, below on the right), and its downhill green, only visible if your tee shot landed on the right side of the fairway (... unlike the nice swimming pool, set behind the green, on the left !). If you haven’t traded your long pants for a bathing suit, then beware of the par-3 8th hole, as fans are standing around (!) the downhill green, framed by two elongated bunkers, making your blind and uphill tee shot quite risky, before heading for the long (almost 630 yards) dogleg right par-5 9th, where you will be lucky to “escape” with a birdie, if you can manage to avoid a big bunker, midway in the inner corner, and another one, on the left of the undulated fairway, two-thirds of the way, before hitting your short approach to the green. The back 9 starts with a gorgeous par-3 hole, with its green, almost looking like a small island with plenty of water around, and is followed by two easier ones, the par-4 11th and par-3 12th, unlike the straight par-4 13th, beautiful but very tricky with water winding its way to the right, then flowing across the fairway, over which you will have to hit your second shot toward the green. Then, after the straight and downhill par-4 14th hole, and its split fairway, midway, you will have to think twice before hitting your tee shot on the dogleg right par-5 15th, as a bunker (on the right) and water (on the left) are in your way, midway, making your club selection tough if you want to have a chance to reach the green on your second shot before heading (perhaps ?) for a well-deserved drink at the very pretty yellow house behind the green, hosting a tavern (and a restaurant !). Finally, after the long par-3 16th hole (around 260 yards), don’t forget to take your camera out to immortalize the downhill par-4 17th hole, simply superb with its breathtaking panoramic view of a wide beach (with tables and beach umbrellas, on the left), its high-rise buildings in front, and its green, surrounded by water halfway (on the left), and the long and straight par-5 18th, with its fairway, split in the middle by an elongated bunker, midway, its beach (on the right) and its green (with the ocean behind), almost impossible to reach on your second shot with a big pond in front of it. Needless to say, rlslay designed, once again, another beauty as this (par 71) Lake Amalia Yacht and Spa Resort course is a feast for the eyes, with its beautiful panoramic views and its attention to details (swimming pool, gazebos, beach umbrellas, etc.), and a definite keeper... even if the greens are flat (and “for the younger kids”), and the yachts far away !
