A famous, yet atypical, course, with small elevation changes, winding creeks and a few narrow greens, hard to reach sometimes, and quite pretty to look at. If the course is relatively short, it is not the case after the dogleg right par-4 1st hole and the par-5 2nd, with a tee shot flying over a small serpentine creek in front of the tee box (leaving you with a blind and long approach upward to the green), as you will find out with the long par-3 3rd, with a tee shot over a small creek flowing diagonally midway, and the very long (more than 630 yards) par-5 4th, downhill all the way, with an undulated fairway and a small creek running in front of the green, impossible to reach on your second shot. The par-4 5th is another nice hole, with a downhill tee shot flying above a meandering creek, across the fairway and branching out all along on the left side of the green, ending next to the slightly-elevated green (on the left). Then, after a few “easier” holes (the slightly-uphill par-4 6th, the short par-4 7th, with trees all along on the right side of the undulated fairway, and the short par-4 8th, with a blind tee shot downhill toward the green), you will move on to the very pretty par-3 9th, with a tee shot over a creek running diagonally in front of the green in front (surrounded by five big bunkers). The back 9 starts with two more short holes, the dogleg left par-4 10th, whose green is impossible to reach from the tee box (with trees in the inner corner hiding it), and the gorgeous but very tough par-4 11th, my favorite hole, slightly downhill, with a narrow fairway and another creek running in front and past the narrow green (and branching out around it). You will get another little “relief” on the next few holes (the dogleg right par-4 12th, with a creek winding its way, midway across the fairway, and a slightly-elevated green, the par-3 13th, and the two wide open par-4 14th and 15th holes, uphill all the way), before heading for the very pretty dogleg left par-4 16th, with an uphill tee shot landing onto a winding fairway, and a blind approach over a wide ditch, filled with shrubs and sand. Finally, after the par-3 17th hole, where you will need to hit a long and blind tee shot over another wide ditch, filled with deep rough, to reach the green, you will complete your round with the straight par-4 18th, with a downhill tee shot over deep rough (on both sides of the fairway) before hitting a last uphill approach toward the green. Overall, with its unusual layout, this par 70 offers quite a challenge and you should enjoy this Merion Golf Club 2013, well designed by the CGX team, with its nice roads, homes and small rocks around the banks of the creeks.
