A unique course, where water in all kinds of shapes and sizes (pond, lake, canal or ocean) is visible on every hole, and where you will have to hit plenty of tee shots and approaches over, not to mention marshlands and high rough, while making sure to avoid lengthy sandy areas and/or wide bunkers, often near and around the greens. If you will be off to a “gentle” start with the par-4 1st hole, the dogleg left par-5 2nd will test you with two tough shots over marshes if you want to reach its elevated green (with bunkers around), before moving on to the dogleg left par-4 3rd, with a tee shot over a big pond and deep rough, followed by an uphill approach past a dead tree standing not too far in front of the elevated green. Then, after the dogleg right par-4 4th hole, and its two shots flying over marshlands, you will walk over to the par-3 5th, with a tee shot over a serpentine sandy area landing onto the green (with the ocean further behind)... Another noteworthy hole is the dogleg right par-5 7th, with its fairway set between sand (on the left) and water (on the right), where you should be able to reach its slightly-elevated green on your second shot for an eagle opportunity, before heading for the par-3 8th, with a tee shot over more sand and an elongated lake behind the green to watch for, and finishing with the dogleg left par-4 9th, with a slightly-uphill tee shot over a sand dune, all the way along the fairway (to the left) and behind the green. The back 9 starts with the dogleg right par-4 10th hole, with a tee shot over a serpentine canal and with sand dunes in front (to the left) and behind the green, and is followed by the nicer and tougher dogleg right par-5 11th, with a wider canal running along the fairway and past the elevated green (on the right), with another approach over sand and rough. The par-4 12th hole is quite pretty, with water on both sides (lake on the left, and a canal), and tricky, with its narrow approach to the green, just like the very tough par-4 13th, one of my favorites, with a tee shot over a canal (flowing along on the right) and with a flag, very close to it (and with sand on the left). The par-3 14th, along the ocean (on the right), is another beautiful hole, with a tee shot over sandy paths landing onto an elevated green, and risky too with its waste bunker (below on the left), and so is the straight par-5 16th, with a big lake in front of the tee box (and the ocean on the far right) and a big sandy area below in front (on the left) of the green. Finally, after the scenic but tricky hole par-3 17th hole, with a tee shot flying over a lake ending to the right side of the green (with two big bunkers on the left to watch for), you will move on to the dogleg right par-4 18th, with a tee shot over plenty of grass and a nice approach landing next to a grandstand (on the right) and the clubhouse (on the left). Nicely designed, as usual by the CGX team, this Kiawah Ocean Course 2012 is quite challenging with all its water holes, marshes and sand, and you will have to think twice before hitting some of your shots, if you don’t want to end up with wet feet or plenty of sand in your shoes...
