What a course from Bobby Bolin ! Not only is this wide open par 71 pretty to look at, it is also quite challenging, especially on the front 9, with “tons” of sand and quite a few water hazards (near or around the greens) to deal with. Right off the bat, you will have your hands full with the very scenic right dogleg par-4 2nd hole, and its two shots over a wide sandy area needed to reach its small green (with a small bunker on the left to watch for), before moving later on to the short right dogleg par-4 4th, quite challenging with a narrow fairway set between trees (on the left) and more sand (on the right) and a second shot over a small lake toward an elevated and narrow green, hard to reach with a lone palm tree, partially hiding it (on the right), a small bunker, halfway around, and a small pond behind it (on the left). On the left dogleg par-5 5th hole, you can forget about scoring an eagle (barring a miracle), with a tee shot landing short of a wide lake across the fairway and another hard-to-reach green, with a wide and elongated bunker and another small pond in front of it (and to the right). Another very difficult hole is the par-4 6th, with its split and tiered fairways, making your slightly-downhill tee shot quite tricky before aiming your long approach toward the elevated and undulating green. Then, after the nice and short par-3 7th hole, with a wide lake behind the green to watch for, you will face the beautiful but very tough left dogleg par-5 8th, with a tee shot landing onto a tree-lined fairway (in front of a wide lake), leaving you with an impossible second shot over the water if you want to reach the green, hidden by tall trees, before walking over to the pretty par-3 9th, with its narrow fairway, set between trees (on the left) and water (on the right). Coming back, you will start with the straight par-4 10th hole, not an easy one with a tee shot landing between an elongated bunker (on the left) and water (on the right) and a tough approach toward the elevated green (with plenty of bunkers in front), before moving over to another tough par-5 hole, the right dogleg par-5 12th, with a tee shot landing near water (on the left) and a bunch of trees (on the right), making your second shot risky if you want to reach its hidden green, set next to a serpentine elongated pond (on the left). Then, after the par-4 13th hole, with a tee shot over water landing onto the fairway surrounded by sand and a blind and downhill approach to the green, slightly to the left, you will have to think twice before hitting your tee shot on the gorgeous par-4 14th, straight and short but with an island filled with trees in the middle, you won’t be able to reach its hidden green, “forcing” you to settle for a shot over the water landing to the right before seeing the green, surrounded halfway by more water. Thankfully, the last four holes are a little bit “easier” : after the par-3 15th hole, straight with a wide sandy area in a V-shape in front of the green, you should have a birdie opportunity on the left dogleg par-5 16th, slightly uphill all the way, with sand along the fairway on both sides and a tough second shot toward the green (with more sand and high weeds, right in front of the elevated green), before finishing with the left dogleg par-4 17th, downhill all the way with sand again framing the fairway, and the straight par-4 18th, with a challenging approach toward the green, slightly to the left (and with a big pond in front). Beautifully designed with nice vegetation, bulkheads and quite a few redan greens, this Otter Trail Golf Club will definitely challenge you, and if you can manage to save par on the par-5 holes, you should give yourself a standing ovation, along with the one addressed to Bobby Bolin, as this fantasy course is one of his best !
