I can generally identify a Quietly course without looking at the designer name, all the courses play like real courses, for good or for bad, and they are all lovely to look at and tough to beat. I lived 3 years in Hawaii, so thanks, Quietly, for reminding me of some of the great courses I played there. Like everyone else, I certainly hope you don't retire from the designer gig, we do love you and your courses.

Has Quietly decided to “retire” in one of those nice resort villas seen on his Mauna Lani Resort South Course ? Let’s hope not, as this par 72 is another pretty course, albeit not the most difficult that he has ever designed but, with his computer having “kicked the bucket” (as he mentioned in the course source section), it would be a big loss ! Why ? Because this real course is pretty to look at, with its panoramic mountain and ocean views, and its fairways often surrounded by lava fields, and its greens, at times tricky to reach with some well-placed bunkers and/or water hazards. The front 9 starts with a right dogleg par-5 hole, with the lava field (on the right, near the tee box) and some pretty resort villas (on the left, midway, with their own... private pools !), and is followed by another right dogleg par-4, and the pretty par-3 3rd hole, with lava on both sides of the fairway all along. The right dogleg par-5 4th is another nice hole with, once again, lava all along the fairway (on the right), a big elongated bunker (midway, on the left) and a very long and delicate approach if you want to reach its small green, next to a smaller elongated lake (on the left), and with a couple of bunkers (on the right). I also like the left dogleg par-4 6th hole, slightly-uphill all the way, with plenty of lava all along the fairway (on the left), and more villas on top of the hill, and a beautiful panoramic view of the ocean behind, and the scenic par-3 7th, with the sound and sight of the crashing waves (on the left) and a tee shot over the lava field to reach the slightly-downhill green. As for the par-4 8th hole, you will have to be careful with your tee shot with lava on both sides of the narrow fairway (but much wider on the left) and a green, slightly to the left. Coming back, if the left dogleg par-4 11th hole is nice, with more lava (on the left) and a tough second shot toward the narrow green (with a bunker in front and a big elongated lake, right behind), the par-3 12th is simply gorgeous, with a tee shot over a very wide lake, and a green, surrounded by three small bunkers. Then, after the right dogleg par-4 13th hole, with a green above a big lava field behind, and the left dogleg par-4 14th, with a tee shot over some small volcanic rocks and more lava all along the fairway (on the left), and a slightly-elevated green, you should stop and take a... selfie (!) before teeing off on the superb par-3 15th (the signature hole seen on the above picture), with a tee shot over the ocean and more lava, landing onto a green, surrounded by a few bunkers. After heading back inland, with the right dogleg par-4 16th hole, with villas lined up (on the left), you will finish with the par-4 17th, with two small elongated lakes (on the left) connected by a tiny stream and green, slightly left, and the left dogleg par-5 18th, along lava (on the left) and two small bunkers guarding its slightly-elevated green. Well-designed as usual by Quietly, with nice plantings, lava and small volcanic rocks, this par 72 is very enjoyable and a definite keeper, and it would be a “shame” if this Mauna Lani Resort South Course would turn out to be his last, as he has done so much to improve this game, over the years, with so many innovations, such as moving cars, trains, falling snow or hang-gliders, just to name a few...
