An eye-pleasing course with its pretty and hilly English countryside panorama, quite wide open but very challenging, with a few trees partially hiding its (mostly) small undulating greens. The first two holes are perfect illustrations : the par-4 1st is a right dogleg with a lone tree (on the left) in the middle of the narrow fairway, halfway (and an elongated bunker further behind) and trees partially hiding a small slanted green, and the par-3 2nd has trees on the right, hiding the green again. Two other holes, worth mentioning, are the par-4 4th, with trees in the middle of a horseshoe-shaped fairway, leaving you with a blind shot downward to the green (slightly to the left), and the dogleg par-4 5th, bending sharply to the right, with plenty of trees in the corner (and a big lake on the opposite side), and more trees, partially hiding its green. But my favorite hole on the front 9 is the left dogleg par-5 9th, with a wide lake, midway on the left, with two “horns” branching out a little bit further, far apart, and over which you will have to hit your second shot to reach the green. The back 9 is more wide open but is not easy either, as you will find out on the par-5 11th hole, with a blind and slightly-uphill tee shot (hopefully) landing over deep rough past an elongated bunker and some shrubs (midway across the fairway), and a long second shot toward the green, with another tree in front of it. The dogleg par-4 13th hole, bending sharply to the right, is not only scenic, it is also quite tough, with a tee shot flying over a wide lake landing near trees on its edge (in the right corner), and more trees, hiding the green (with a few tiny bunkers lined up in front lengthwise), and is followed by two similar par-3 holes, with a tee shot over deep rough and a green, totally hidden, surrounded by trees (on the 14th) and more trees, framing the small green (on the 15th). As for the last three holes, two of them are par-5s where, despite their length, you should be able to get birdie opportunities : the 16th is a left dogleg, with a tee shot landing short of a bunker forming a loop across the fairway, midway, and a green, impossible to reach on your second shot ; then after the long par-3 17th, and its green, halfway surrounded by trees and four bunkers, you will finish with the right dogleg par-5 18th, slightly-uphill all the way, with a tee shot landing short of a wide bunker (and with a big rock in the middle), followed by a long second shot with a lone tree in front of the green. Needless to say, on this par 71, you will have to hit accurate tee shots and approaches to avoid those well-placed trees : if you do, then you should break par on this French Horn Lake Golf Course, nicely designed by Bruce Ryder, even though its... 18 libraries (!) might discourage some players from downloading it !
