I use more up to date and clearer Google Earth images and not the ancient crappy pics available through USGS.
So I need the coordinates to match so pic alighns with DEM.
Looks like when you make the box on the new site, it shows Long and Lat where the currsor is. So I can write those down and work backwards.

Bill, it depends on what course is sought out, crappy images are also in google earth, even when checking history images, they are not alway hi res, i have used google earth pics and copy and paste into photoshop ontop of a bad USGS image i obtained to clear it up in TA, takes a lot of work but its worth it to trace well, what mike posted is a simplified method for those that are confused with the change in USGS for designers, just trying to help with a different method with the change |

The tutorial is excellent but make sure you get the 1/3 arc dem (10 meters) and not the 1 arc (30 meters)

1/3 arc is accurate to +- 10 meters 1 arc is +- 30 meters = not very accurate.
