Question for designers: I have saved so many times it isnt even funny. I dont know exactly what everything looks like in game so I have to go test things a million times it seems from CA to game. Im hoping as I gain experience I know better what does what so I can get quicker with this stuff, but do you experienced designers still look at a course in game all the time to see how things turned out ?
Here a few pictures of my 1st hole with water on course. Might go back & put a few creeks in a few places, but not to much because Im all about trying to save as many points as I can right now. Course is still running smooth, and no lag, so Im keeping my fingers crossed with some serious praying involved too.
12th hole PAR5 below, and there are a few options for the player to set themselves up with different angles to green across the lake. Depending on pin positioning Eagle or Birdie can be had here with 2/3 good shots to green, but danger looms with water in play on 1st two shots. Well, unless you can Happy Gilmore, and can smack it across the pond in one shot.........LOL

The way I laid this course out, and having to do it hole by hole has made me have to make it all out of order. I have some finishing holes on back 9 done, and now working on middle of back 9 now. Going to try to get this puppy done so I can do another course soon. This course has been a great learning experienced & real fun to make even though it gets aggravating sometimes. I still have soooo much to learn with things, and there is much stuff to designing courses. Its feel like Im trying to get a college degree. Scary to think I havent even touched 80% of what left with all this.... WOW

Well, first let me say that I am NOT, by any means, an experienced designer, think I just finished my first one... :)
But I definitely check mine in the game quite often, and as you, save almost a silly amount...:) If I screwed something up, I would rather know sooner than later..lol It is always nice to see something you try working out!!! Some really good pics here Squirrely, looks like your turning into quite the bunker man!!
Watch the overheads tho, try to make sure none of the hole is cut off...(;Its easy to miss...) As I was told lately by an experienced designer :), the Expert crowd will not be happy... But you probably already know that, think Ive seen you at PGAX...
Nice work man :) |

OK Was just wondering if I was crazy for going into game so much, but like you said, better to catch things early. I have made many mistakes, and had to redo many things on this course, after losing much work a few times. I'm sorta freak with checking things, but at least I haven't made so many mistakes like the beginning. After figuring out how to do the techniques that are used on this course things have gotten somewhat better , but with me being such a darn worry wart, I check like a mad man still. I have to go back & look at all my overheads, some are doglegs that are going to be tough to figure out how to get overheads all good without making them to long with the yardage read in game. Read you can change yardage in some TNA file or something like this, but not exactly sure how this works.
Thanks for the comments on bunkers, but I got way to crazy with this course, and have come to learn that CA has much limitations where you can't go nuts like I did. My 1st course so I will take this knowledge with me on next one so I don't go through this no more.

Very nice water feature, not sure what your shader level is set to?
You must be talking about the ini. file for ydgs?
Remember the shot path does not have to end on the green, it can be to the left, right or just short, experiment and you will see, some of mine don't end up on the green, so I can get the yds right and the overheads.
Saves? My last course I had over 200 saves, this one I'm up to 130 but it's done pretty much.
I will do my tee's. then check them, fix them, check them, then save them, then move on to the green, same process.
I will do some work on a green, check it several times and when I like it I save it. Now if I find later that I have a tear or raised edge, I will make sure I saved last copy which I do every time I exit for the session, then I fix that tear, if I have more then one, say 3 raised edges along the green, I will fix one, save, fix 2 save and so on.
But I have to tell you, after abiding by Rogers tutorial about not adding a fringe until completely done, I have cut down on the raised edges tremendously. It is one of the most valuable tips I have ever learned.
So don't worry, I go back in forth so much I get dizzy sometimes.

The course is looking good. I like how you give a few options for the various shots available.
I am in the same boat as everyone else. I have all sorts of saved files on the go, just in case something goes wrong, I can at least go back to the last one I worked on, without having to go through to much heartache. Nothing worse than putting hours into a course or similar and then having the file corrupt itself.
Keep working on it in between your comps, as it is coming along well. |

Sq,
I think that pano fits perfectly with the course. I noticed at the beginning of the thread that you weren't sure about it. I'd say leave that one on there.

OK Thanks for the tips & kind words, if ya think the Pano looks cool, I'll keep it............
Showing my Mom & Dad this stuff right now while they've been visiting all day, and they think it's a pretty cool game. They are amazed with what us designers can do by making custom courses. Showed them what we make courses with(CA), and they couldn't believe we make these things with the views we have in CA. Showed them a few other courses too, and I'm going to show them some more here in a bit. They like it, and this stuff must be in our blood.... :P I'm even more proud then what I was beforehand after seeing my parents reaction to all this stuff. Boy, I'm sure glad I found this TW world.
Finished the green on the PAR 5 from above pictures, and here a few pictures below. Did this while my parents looked on to show them how things work in CA, and this is probably the fasted I've ever worked in CA. Need them to come over more often because I'd be done with this course by now working at that pace.... LOL

Hit a gren pure drive to get it 328 down the fairway, and you get a sweet look at green on this part of fairway. Getting on in two is no problem from here.

I'm working on my signature hole on course, and wanted some color bushes that stood out on hole, but the blue ones I picked didn't show up to well. Might try some other libs to see, but didn't really want to bring a whole new lib in just for one bush. Will try out some other bushes just to see what it does, but wanted to know if this was normal or is it just my GPU maybe doing things differently like I've read about before.
Is this normal for some bushes to not show up from a certain distance like grass does sometimes ?
Pictures showing what I'm talking about
1st - - - Shows the blue bushes not even showing from tee 2nd - - - Shows blue bushes not even showing to week from behind tee 3rd - - - Shows the yellow bushes doing good from tee 4th - - - Shows yellow bushes doing OK from behind green too
Haven't messed around with plantings to much yet, so I'm real clueless to how they do in TW
Thanks Squirrely

Might try to find a red/white bush that pops because I really wanted something that stood out on course from other holes here on this hole. I played a cool course last night that had sweet red bushes, but I think it was maybe older library. The leaves seem to look not as detail has TW08 plants do, but not completely sure, it must have taken a long time to learn all these plantings. So many of them out there to chose from, that's for sure
Thanks Squirrely

I noticed it on the PGAX course for the reno tournament that some plants don't show until it is close enough to render. Might be one of those things that they wll show the closer you get to it. There aren't a lot of colourful ones out there either.
Some nice looking shots there Squirrely.
Keep working on it. |

Yeah, after playing around with some bushes, some render better than others it seems. Been testing things here lately to see cause & effect. This course has been a cool learning experience, but as bad as I want to release it Ive been using it for learning tool trying things out, and there will much more to learn in the future, thats for sure.
Finally got my my final hole thought up,and will get it done maybe today, it was hard deciding on final hole because I wanted it to be a OK finshing hole where a player could get birdie if need be, but get a bad score to if they hit bad shots. There are many other things I want to test out before releases it to see if I can squeeze some more FPS out of her. Shes playing smooth with no lag that would mess swings up, but not sure how it does on other PCs, so Im sorta in the dark with all that. Well, the 1st tee has one little spot where there is a hiccup, but Im going to redo that tee box because I have a feeling me being totally clueless when I made it kinda messes it up like this. Plus, I have to still test to see if different Pano is better too, and if putting trees in between some holes blocking views of course helps too with performance. Hopefully soon I can finally releases my 1st ever course, but want to make sure its where I dont regret not doing something later on. I probably spend to much time testing all the time, but this has helped with the learning process while trying all kind of stuff out that I probably wouldnt have if I didnt do this. Who knows, but Im sure am ready to get to a new course..... LOL
Squirrely
Its weird that one of my most simplest greens is turning out to be my favorite approach shots on course to green on course. Putting on it is cool too with slope it has. I tested some more this morning, and on this 17th hole approach shot, you gotta play the fairway to have a better chance of holding green so its doesnt roll off a pretty good sloping front to back green. Its fun trying to get it to hit just right to do this, and its become one of my most favorite plays on course. Going to practice my spin shot here to see if I can spin it good to make it hold better so I know if there is another option players can do, but I havent been able to do this to well yet in expert play.

Cool, thanks a lot buddy I think I can add another lib since I got like 5 or 6 so far, and those red flowers would be great to have on that hole. Its Terries hole, so she be happy to know its going to have red flowers. Oh boy, that didnt sound to good, did it ? :P
Got the 18th almost completely finished yesterday, but got many things to test out still, make those logo/splash thingy things that are needed, test some tree stuff, and Im soooooooo worried how its going to play on other PCs. Im amazed at the killer speeds you other designers make these awesome courses, and this is one things Im going to try to improve overtime. Hopefully soon. Ill be able to make course without having to go see everything I do to see how it works & looks, but this is fun at the same time to see what it does after making something in that flat looking CA. Still need to get to the point where I can go faster though.
Very rewarding I must say all this stuff is, and is one of the coolest things Ive done in a while Squirrely |

Boy, I can almost see the finishing line with this course, and it still seems soooooooo far away still though.....LOL Got main playing parts on 18th holes done on course, and been testing some things out today, to see cause & effect. Think I got what tee markers(maybe some benches too) going to use, and will see if I can figure that Logo/splash screen stuff out too sometime this week so can finally release a course one day. Been a learning experience let me tell ya, and very frustrating at times, but I wouldn't trade it for all the fun I've have while doing this. I love it because it's soo darn cool. Have this funny feeling I haven't even touched the surface yet with what's left to learn with designing..... hahaha
Here the finishing 18th hole below, and I wanted a signature pot bunker on course, so I made this puppy somewhat deeper than other of pot bunkers, but nothing that can't be played. Well, unless you have just nasty lie up against wall. I've had to take medicine here while testing, and go away from pin a few times. Hopefully I accomplished the purpose of this Pot bunker with finishing hole because it suppose to create a thought of if going for green in 2 is worth the danger it brings. Water hopefully does this too, but not sure since I'm not to great at playing TW.
Eagle, Birdie or bad score can be had here on this hole, but you must hit 2 or 3 good shots to get Ok score........
1st picture ---- showing my player in pot bunker green side on 18th hole. my head is sightly poking out here......:P
