Course Architect Troubleshooting Guide draft version
By Mark Troutman (;nuttywoody) for coursedownloads.com 2009

This guide addresses several known problems and bugs associated with Tiger Woods Course Architect 06 (;CA06).

General Tips

Save early, Save Often
¡§Save early, save often¡¨ is a commonly used rule with any computer work. This policy is certain to save you time and effort in course design. If you save every 15 minutes, you will never loose more than 15 minutes worth of work.

Swap File Errors
Please note that many errors and crashing are cased by what is known as the ¡§Swap File Error¡¨. Although not every CA crash is swap file related, it is a good idea to routinely delete the swap files when you experience any type of unusual behavior in CA06. To fix this, go to go to the CA06 program folder;; open the ¡§Swap¡¨ folder;; delete all swap files. Then restart CA06.

Swap files are created by CA06 to keep track of and display the library browser. After deleting the swap files, you will find that CA06 will require a minute or two to regenerate the swap files.

Library Limitation
CA06 has a limitation on the number of libraries that can be installed and used in a project. The number of libraries will vary according to the file sizes of the libraries you are attempting to use. Use the CLTool to cloak any libraries you are not using. You can also use CLTool to set the default library to one of the stock TW08 libraries that you are using in your course.

Repair Tool
It is a good idea to use the ¡§Repair Tool¡¨ frequently. It is advisable to get into the habit of running it at the end of a design session, just before you save the file. The repair tool fixes point errors in the file data that occur during the design process. Files with fewer errors are probably less prone to crashes and corrupting. The Repair Course tool can be found at the bottom of the Tools pull-down in the CA.

Re-install
In general, if the listed fixes do not correct the problem, you should uninstall and re-install CA06. This only takes a few minutes, and since CA06 utilizes virtually no customization, this process if fairly simple.

Windows Vista
Courses may be designed with CA running under the Vista operating systems, but they cannot be compiled. Compiling a course appears to work in CA, but the resulting tcr file will not load in the game. There are two options that address this issue. Designers must do course compilation on a PC running Windows XP. Alternately, you can install Windows Virtual PC on the Vista machine, and load a copy of windows XP to the Virtual PC and set up your design software on the Virtual PC. Fortunately this is not as difficult or exotic as it sounds. There is a detailed tutorial available called ¡§Virtual Machine for Vista at coursedownloads.com.

Common Issues

Crash on opening file:
o Missing or cloaked library. Se CLTool to check course tca file and verify all required libraries are present and uncloaked.
o Swap file error: Go to the CA06 program folder;; open the ¡§Swap¡¨ folder;; delete all swap files. Restart CA06.

Crash while working
Occasionally the CA will either crash while working on a design or while compiling a course. This can happen without warning,
o Swap file error: (;see above)
o Corrupt tca file: Re-open course architect. Select ¡§open existing course¡¨. Open the most recently saved course file. DO NOT select open previous course and then ¡§recover from backup¡¨. This will over-write your last saved version before the crash.

Properties dialog does no appear on right-click:
o Swap file error: (;see above)

Break Line Error
o Terrain shapes become greatly distorted in to large triangular areas, shape and texture data is lot. Undo does not correct the problem. When this happens, close the CA, but DO NOT SAVE WHEN PROMPTED! Then delete swap files. Next, re-start course architect. Select ¡§open previous course¡¨. DO NOT ¡§recover from backup¡¨. When this pop-up appears, (;click ¡§Cancel¡¨) This will open the last saved version of the file.
