If their was a petition that went out to EA or Tibourn., maybe it could make a difference. |

Chris, The main thing I can think of that maybe the cause of past crashes, some of which we have chatted about is very high grass settings on the custom roughs, the uses of number of libs(each lib loads in its entirety even if you do not use more than 1 item). I have also noticed that Jimbos libraries are not very friendly in post 06 courses. I have had crashes related to flowers, carts, and tourney objects, so this can be another thing to look at. I if would like to use things from multiple libraries that are older, feel free to list what they are or post thumbnails and the lib name and I can whip you up a extras lib, or If you have a set of common objects you use over and over like certain tv towers etc, let me know what they are and I can make you a Hyno Extras or something that you can use over and over for all of your courses.
This is what Scottsdale has on it: 208061 (including breakline points) Num shapes: 428 Num objects: 5821 |

There are several reasons, I think, and it is just not one. Everything does add to it. To pin point the exact reason is very difficult.

Ill chime in here just for kicks. I think CTD issues are the result of a number of factors, not just the number of shapes or objects. You can have only 500 objects on a course, but if you use every object from 4 different stock libraries, then Ill bet youll run into problems.
For a course that runs as well as possible, I think its a question of: (1) smart smoothing/optimizing to manage point count and prevent a run-up in points in any particular area on the plot (2) smart planting by using as few different types of trees/bushes as possible and from as few different libraries as possible (3) efficient use of structures and staying away from high poly count structures.
I dont really understand the fascination with grandstands/TV towers but thats just me. I dont spend hundreds of hours on elevations and mounding and getting the plantings just right only to hide it all with grandstands and other clutter. Also, the galleries do nothing for me I dont set them on my courses because I cant stand the look of the zombies and, again, I think they just hide the beauty of the course. But, hey, its just a matter of personal preference.
Do I think the Course Architect is perfect? No, but it certainly does the trick. I have my own little system for designing and it works just fine for my purposes. I agree with TBM Im just happy to have a CA that works and gives me a little break from the stresses of the work day. |

This is my concept of what I wanted: I picked up a copy of British Open Championship golf about 10 years ago, since than that was how I wanted my tiger woods courses to look. With all those extras. Basically wanted to play British Open courses with that atmosphere in a video game.
The goal was to create a simulation of playing in the British Open. It was never really possible, but that is still the goal...Play this game in the wind, fog, rain, with weed rough....British Open signs on every hole, the Royal Bank of Scotland sign at the back of the tee box, the rolex clocks, galley ropes. Galleries.....Grandstands ??? than 18 at Royal Troon should be lined with 6 of them. Filled with people. Than the big Giant Open Champ leaderboard hanging off of one of the grandstands.
You can download the British Open Game for free. I think it missing the commentary...The commentary was awesome in this game. The galleries in the rain would have umbrellas.

On Birkdale 04, EA uses 4 textures to line this bunker...
I did my tests, and figured out pretty much what I already knew.....I dont feel like typing it....
Can things be done with in the limits of the game? Yes for sure, the less you have the less chance of problems, the larger the size of the course, the more possible problems you can have.
It is up to the player to find the settings that works the best for them. I like the extra details and that is why I play this game. Those features are not going to be taken out....
I was going to retire, it is just a video game, and these courses are free. The courses have a short life and usually end when the game changes to a new year. If the course is not good, people will not waste time on it. If the courses dont work the same thing...

This is kind of interesting. Royal St. Georges started crashing towards the end of the project. During the building of this course and testing I was using Sergio Garcia. Well I just decided to create a new player Bubba Watson. Blah Blah Blah....I saw the confidence folder...I than checked my custom players, sergio was over 7 MB. The course basically only crashed when using Sergio. On some of the players I have, I forget to delete this folder.... |

I dont know it 08 courses are backward compatible with TW07 but it would be interesting to see if the problem 08 courses run ok in TW07 without crashing then maybe the culprit is not CA but the TW08 engine. |

Wizards, I have been having this problem since 06. For me, I just build these courses different.
On your courses I have no idea, it is impossible to tell from not seeing the TCA file.
Right now, trying to avoid this and have the courses run at a higher setting. For whatever reason, the confidence folder in mydoc/tw08/career/players seems to be causing this. Even when I delete the folder it some how comes back. Actually I just played all of Homeboys courses with Ernie Els no problems. Coeur d`Alene was really good.
I get to Carolinia Starling (which is mine) on hole 5, when I am putting out, I feel the game freeze. At that point, I knew Ernies confidence folder was getting big. Next hole, hit the tee shot, and right after this pic, it crashes. I will go back an re-load the game, now that the confidence folder was removed it will run fine. The thing is, this little quirk crashes my courses, and not other designers. But again, the other designers courses that I am trying, dont have galleries on them. |

Go to confidence folder for player and delete it. Play ONE hole and then return to same confidence folder (where it reappears) and go to properties. Mark it as read only. This file will then never get any larger with future play. Old issue, old resolution. |

The confidence trick was one of the first tweaks i did for TW08 and it certainly fixed all game lag isssues as ZB mentions. I never had large confidence files crash a course but the game became almost unplayably slow!
The only consistent observation (for me) when a course crashes is that it occurs 99.9% of the time when i am on the green just about to putt or adjust the putt aim arrow. This occurs at random ie never on the same green.
Could this be a region where there are lots of breaklines very close together ie greens, fringes, fairways and first cuts.?
If i restart the game and continue from that point, the game generally continues to the end without another crash which is ok for offline but no good for online play! |

I finally ran across this thread... just today (in May). I am not the best at checking threads very often (obviously). Sorry to reply so late - but I really enjoyed your design of Royal St. Georges. The work you did was outstanding! I certainly wish I would have seen the thread while you were working on the design - it is always fun to watch a designer progress through the design process...
I definitely want to see the classic links courses done well and out there for cyber-golfer to play.
Great job!
